Clinical Interests:

Dr. Brian Drolet is the Chief of Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery in the Department of Plastic Surgery. His clinical expertise includes chronic and acute conditions of the hand and wrist. He has a particular interest in peripheral nerve surgery, including nerve repair, reconstruction and decompression with minimally invasive techniques for carpal and cubital tunnel syndromes. Dr. Drolet leads a team that helps patients with painful conditions like arthritis using new techniques for denervation of joints, as well as other conditions like post-amputation and phantom limb pain using regenerative peripheral nerve interfaces (RPNI). 
 
Professional and Academic Involvement:

Dr. Drolet is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery with additional certification in Surgery of the Hand.  He is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha and Gold Humanism Honor Societies and has received multiple awards for teaching and research.  Drolet is a member of numerous professional organizations including the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH), American Association for Hand Surgery (AAHS), American Council of Educators in Plastic Surgeons (ACEPS), American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), and Plastic Surgery Research Council (PSRC).  He is also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Drolet is actively involved in teaching medical students, residents and fellows as the Vice Chair for Education. He is also the co-chair of the VUMC Ethics Committee and a faculty member in the Center for Biomedical Ethics and Society.

Research:

Dr. Drolet has diverse research interests. He has led clinical projects focused on hand surgery, including as the principal investigator for a randomized controlled trial at the VA, and has published on various subjects including medical education, biomedical informatics, medical ethics, and quality improvement. Dr. Drolet is the author of nearly 200 peer-reviewed publications, including three first-author publications in The New England Journal of Medicine and two in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).
