Who We Are
Medicine and health care at Vanderbilt have roots in a rich history of learning and practice dating back nearly 150 years. During that time, leading physicians and health practitioners have worked its wards as students, residents, fellows, interns, and faculty, advancing the medical field to far reaches of the world. Years pass, technology advances, and new faces shape change and progress. But all trainees and teachers throughout that long history share a common bond as Vanderbilt Medical Alumni.
The Vanderbilt Medical Alumni Association (VMAA) builds and maintains mutually beneficial relationships between generations of health care practitioners at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and Vanderbilt University Medical Center. As an organization dedicated to alumni, VMAA connects over 22,000 members all over the world to networks and resources built on Vanderbilt’s foundation of excellence in community-driven training and practice.
Medical Alumni across specialties, occupations, and locations find representation on the VMAA Board, an advisory council driving initiatives and events to support the continued success of Vanderbilt alumni for years to come. The current board president is Mary Laird Warner (MD ’90).

What We Do
VMAA staff work closely with the VMAA Board and administration at VU, VUSM, and VUMC to promote continued excellence at each step of our members’ careers. We travel the country to connect with alumni at mixers and conferences across years and specialties. We also invite alumni home to Nashville every two years for Reunion, a week of entertainment, reminiscing, and recognition.
Between events, VMAA provides the latest news from VUSM and VUMC and acts as a resource for making connections and supporting future generations. We help you keep in touch with classmates, faculty, and friends through news about alumni accomplishments, both professional and personal. VMAA likewise fosters mentorship among those who call Vanderbilt a common home. From your first days as a Vanderbilt trainee or teacher to your very last days, VMAA honors your contributions to Vanderbilt and to health care.
VMAA empowers missions of service and learning through sponsorship of events like those at Shade Tree Clinic, Vanderbilt’s student-run free clinic for Nashville’s underserved, underinsured, and uninsured populations. We help support milestone events like the MD White Coat Ceremony, Match Day, Commencement, and orientation events. We also facilitate:

- Transcript verification and requests
- Benefits for travel and recreation
- Discounts
- Parking
Who YOU Are
Every VUSM or VUMC graduate, resident, fellow, intern, and faculty member is an alumnus, and is eligible for all of the benefits and services that being an alumnus affords. You are part of a diverse group of more than 22,000 health care practitioners (future, current, and former) across the globe.
Our alumni have pioneered areas of medicine like the development of the first Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, significantly advanced immunology critical to care during the COVID-19 pandemic, served in Congress, acted as personal physicians to stars like Elvis Presley, and so much more.
You push forward a tradition of excellence no matter where you are in the world. You are the VMAA.
