Life Science Tennessee (LifeSciTN) will be offering an internship opportunity for winter/spring 2015-2016. The position is paid and will provide meaningful experiences for an individual interested in life science policy, as well as a unique opportunity to network and learn more about the industry in Tennessee and the U.S.

We are looking for a candidate with strong writing, project management, interpersonal and research skills who excels in time and task management. We expect the intern to work approximately 8-10 hours a week on a regular weekly schedule determined at the beginning of the internship period.

The intern will also have the opportunity to attend and participate in the LifeSciTN federal (must be a US citizen or permanent resident to qualify for ASPIRE travel funds) and state policy days:

Federal Policy Day
Washington, D.C. | January 26 – 27, 2016 | U.S. Capitol 
Life Science Tennessee starts our "Day in D.C." with an afternoon update on January 26 on federal policy from our Policy and Advocacy Committee, as well our federal industry partners including AdvaMed and BIO. The following day, the group meets with members of Tennessee's Congressional delegation and senior policy staff to discuss the issues in detail. 

State Policy Day
Nashville | February 9, 2016 | Legislative Plaza
During our legislative "Day on the Hill" in Nashville we meet with the legislative leadership and make presentations about the impacts and opportunities for industry growth in Tennessee. We will also close the day with a reception for legislators, staffers and members.

Job responsibilities of the Life Science TN policy intern include:

  • life science and health care policy research
  • copywriting for policy collaterals
  • industry outreach
  • elected official outreach
  • administrative and organizational responsibilities

LifeSciTN is a statewide, non-profit, member organization whose mission is to advance and grow the life science industry in Tennessee through advocacy, partnerships and alignment with economic and workforce development.  Members include companies, universities, research institutions, government and economic development groups, and other industry associations involved in discovery and application of life sciences products and related services that improve the health and well-being of people throughout the world.

LifeSciTN conducts business and economic development activities; advocates on behalf of the industry; educates the public about the benefits of life sciences research and product development; and provides a network for the exchange of ideas, information and opportunities.  

 

ASPIRE Internship Eligibility Requirements

  • Applicants must be a current Vanderbilt University PhD student or a current postdoctoral fellow.
  • All PhD students must have completed all coursework for their degree prior to the January 2016 semester.
  • Biomedical PhD students must also have passed their qualifying exams before the application deadline.
  • If you are an international student or postdoctoral fellow, your visa status may affect your work eligibility. Please contact Ashley Brady (ashley.brady@vanderbilt.edu) to discuss this further.
  • We encourage all applicants to  maintain open communication with your research advisor and discuss any significant time away from the lab in advance of interviewing and accepting this internship position. Faculty are aware of ASPIRE program activities, but our office will not be notifying your faculty advisor about your application or participation.
