Teaching Assistants needed for Organic Chemistry, Fall 2017, Vanderbilt University

Posted by on Friday, August 11, 2017 in Uncategorized .

The Department of Chemistry is currently seeking graduate students or postdocs to serve as Teaching Assistants (TAs) to support 3 sections of Organic Chemistry lab (Lab Supervisors) and 6 Recitation Sections (Recitation Leaders).

Lab Supervisors: The TA will be required to supervise lab and grade lab reports. Lab TAs will need to take a 2 hr chemical safety workshop in advance of supervising the labs.

Recitation leaders: The TA would guide students though weekly interactive workshops. Recitations are 50 minute supplements to lecture that typically have < 24 students.  Recitation instructors will do some lecturing of new material, but will mostly reinforce lecture material and assist students in developing problem solving skills. The smaller numbers should promote discussion. There will be prepared workshop materials that serve as a guide to the recitation period. The recitation material will be discussed and refined during a weekly meeting (~1 hr) with the recitation coordinator.   The recitation coordinator would like to meet with the Recitation Leaders the week before the first recitation.

TAs may choose their level of commitment as 1 or 2 labs per week, or 2–4 Recitation sections per week for the entire semester.

  • Fall 2017 semester starts Wed., Aug 23, 2017
  • Recitation and lab check-in start on Mon., Aug 28, 2017
