The Associate Director, STEM Graduate Careers, designs, develops and delivers comprehensive career and professional development coaching, programming, and career placement efforts for Syracuse University Master’s and PhD students, as well as post-doctoral fellows in STEM fields. Creates, coordinates and delivers career and professional development presentations on topics of relevance to STEM students, including programming and support designed to increase career opportunities for International STEM students. Partners with Colleges of Engineering and Computer Sciences, Arts and Sciences, and the iSchool to develop tailored career and professional development programming that augments support provided within schools and colleges, and provides on-site student support as needed within school/colleges (e.g., drop-in office hours). Gains familiarity with and attracts employers and recruiters to improve placement and retention of STEM students. Conducts outreach to students and faculty to raise the profile of Graduate Professional and Career Development campus-wide. Assists in the overall management of Graduate Professional and Career Development. Provides support for immersion programs and other initiatives to connect students with employment opportunities. Supports all other activities and functions of Graduate Professional and Career Development. Represents Syracuse University in the Graduate Career Consortium. Participates in professional development activities.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required 
• PhD in a STEM or related discipline preferred, with interest in and knowledge of STEM careers
• Familiarity with STEM-oriented positions in industry

Job Specific Qualifications

• Experience in college career services, experience in a STEM-related profession, and/or related environment and exposure to working with diverse, international populations. 
• Team orientation with interest and ability to work collaboratively; demonstrated willingness to take initiative and aptitude to work independently. 
• Good organizational skills and ability to effectively plan, coordinate, and oversee events. 
• Comfortable with public speaking and content delivery. 
• Skilled in use of online career resources, career assessments, career center management system and other online resources. 
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build and maintain professional relationships with students, alumni, employers, colleagues, faculty and staff. 
• Experience with diverse and international populations is essential. 
• Solid written and verbal communication skills, especially public speaking. 
• Solid computer skills including but not limited to: Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, electronic communications, databases; knowledge of the world of work.

Responsibilities

• Independently manage the delivery of career coaching/advising sessions for Master’s and PhD students and alumni in STEM-related fields covering all career issues and involving all available career fields. Administer and interpret career assessment instruments.
• Design and deliver unique career education programming covering all aspects of career development, job search strategies and professionalization planning for Syracuse University students and alumni. Develop and design unique programs to address the career fields of interest for specific populations of students (e.g. Engineering, iSchool, Arts and Sciences). Participate in the planning and delivery of events and support of projects within Graduate Professional and Career Development.
• Develop and maintain relationships with employers to aid in placement, informational interviewing, networking, and program delivery.
