The American Heart Association (AHA) was founded in 1924 and has grown into the nation’s oldest and largest voluntary organization dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke. A shared focus on cardiovascular health unites our more than 33 million volunteers and supporters as well as our more than 3,400 employees. Our size and scope let us have real impact. We have invested more than $4.1 billion in research, more than any U.S. nonprofit organization.
Heart disease is the No. 1 killer worldwide, and stroke ranks second globally. Even when those conditions don’t result in death, they cause disability and diminish quality of life. We want to see a world free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. The AHA is working to improve the cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20 percent, and reduce deaths from cardiovascular diseases and stroke by 20 percent, by the year 2020.
The Community Health Intern will be supervised by the American Heart Association, Nashville Affiliate’s Vice President, Health Strategies and will assist in driving AHA’s health strategies initiatives throughout middle Tennessee. These initiatives focus strongly on how to drive impact in change toward the AHA’s 2020 impact goal. The Health Strategies departments are: Communications/Marketing, Advocacy, Quality and System Improvement, and Community Impact. The intern will help various Health Strategies department directors implement specific programs that impact the community that we serve.
THE PARTICIPANT WILL:
- Help manage the community health assessment
- Understand the role of process improvement to drive better patient outcomes in a hospital and primary care setting
- Help lead implementation, in conjunction with local AHA staff, for Workplace Health Solutions, Target:BP, Check Change control, Check Change Control Cholesterol and local Community projects.
- Spread mission through Middle TN market by engaging volunteers, student programs and community centers
- Drive key special projects and support innovative strategies with partners to solve community problems and create a culture of health
- Serve as mission lead, representing and supporting AHA’s role as a collaborative community partner to create community change
- Partner with various directors to create plans, activities, events and volunteer committees designed to support the community health priorities
- Serve as a liaison for the AHA staff in building positive strategic relationships with key decision makers in the market to support health strategies and overall community goals.
- Gain exposure to the professional culture in a non-profit healthcare-centered organization
INTERNSHIP DETAILS
- Internship will run October-December 2018, with the opportunity to extend pending review.
- Internship is unpaid, part-time (2-5 hours per week, variable)

Eligibility requirements
- Applicants must be a current Vanderbilt University PhD student or a current postdoctoral fellow.
- All PhD students must have completed all coursework for their degree prior to the start of the internship.
- Biomedical PhD students must also have passed their qualifying exams before the application deadline.
- Students and postdocs may not participate in more than one internship at a time. More than one application may be submitted at a single time, but only one position can be accepted.
- If you are not in a department supported by the BRET office, we will also require that you complete a form guaranteeing PI approval to participate in this program. Please contact Ashley Brady at ashley.brady@vanderbilt.edu for more information.
