ELC Academic Writing Workshops

The English Language Center (ELC) offers a series of academic workshops with a particular language theme and focus. The Academic Writing Workshop series consists of individual sessions that cover topics especially relevant to students and scholars who use English as an additional language. Each session has a particular theme and includes activities, exercises, discussion, and feedback. Workshops are free and signing up is important to reserve your place. 25 September: Reading Academic Texts in the U.S. 

Exploring effective ways of reading complex U.S. academic texts. Learning and practicing various strategies, such as language journals and key word tracking, for retaining academic vocabulary.

 

16 October: Writing about Sources in Academic English

Delving deeper into Paraphrasing/Quoting/Summarizing techniques, with an emphasis on scholarly tone and author positioning. Examining effective literature synthesis styles and correct verb tenses/reporting verbs in discipline-specific fields.

 

6 November: The Language of Data Commentaries

Exploring effective ways to read and write data commentaries. Understanding the role of highlighting statements, qualifying claims, and organizational patterns when writing about data.
