Communication expert Jean-luc Doumont to present “Making the Most of your Presentation” at VU on Feb. 27 – Apply today!

Posted by on Tuesday, January 21, 2020 in Upcoming BRET Office of Career Development Events .

The BRET Office of Career Development, along with the Vanderbilt Graduate School, has invited back our 2019 ASPIRE to Connect keynote speaker, Dr. Jean-luc Doumont. He will be conducting his dynamic and hands-on workshop, “Making the most of your Presentation.” Participants of our Data Science Essentials ASPIRE module were fortunate to take part in Dr. Doumont’s “Making the Most of Your Presentation” workshop last year, and here is what they had to say about the experience:

“Jean-luc’s workshop was spectacular. It has directly influenced the way I communicate my data and has already benefited me”
“This was an extremely helpful workshop! I think Jean-luc had excellent, thoughtful advice that he presented in a fun, yet information-packed session. I will definitely be applying the techniques I learned to my thesis defense, and am really glad to have participated in this workshop before I finished grad school. I’m confident that I’ll be giving better presentations in academia and in the broader job market as a result of this session. So helpful!!”

Don’t miss out on the opportunity to spend the day working on your presentation skills with Dr. Doumont! This workshop is limited to 25 participants, so an application for this event is required. Full workshop description is below.

Making the most of your presentation

Strong presentation skills are a key to success for researchers, yet many speakers are at a loss to tackle the task. Systematic as they usually are in their work, they go at it intuitively or haphazardly, with much good will but seldom with an effective outcome. In this interactive workshop, Dr Doumont proposes a systematic way to prepare and deliver an oral presentation: he covers structure, slides, and delivery, as well as stage fright. Expect to be educated, entertained, and pushed (gently) out of your comfort zone—but, mostly, be prepared to share your experience as a speaker and as an audience member, to provide some of your slides for discussion, and to challenge anything anyone recommends until it makes sense to you.
