| Job Summary | Oberlin College seeks a Director for the Center for Learning, Education, and Research in the Sciences (CLEAR) in support of Oberlin’s goal of promoting the persistence and success of all students in STEM fields. This is a full-time 12-month, Administrative and Professional Staff position with an excellent benefits package and competitive salary.Founded in 1833, Oberlin is a private four-year, highly selective liberal arts college near Cleveland, Ohio, and is also home to an outstanding Conservatory of Music. | Responsibilities | To promote the success of all students in STEM, CLEAR organizes a range of activities. The Director will oversee a peer-staffed quantitative skills center, a supplemental instruction program, departmental action and reflection teams, and courses on quantitative skill preparedness and/or a first-year seminar, and duties as assigned. The Director will mentor and be assisted by a recent graduate hired as a STEM Fellow and work as a team with the Office of Undergraduate Research and the Inclusive Excellence faculty leadership group. The Director will have strong leadership and communication skills, the ability to motivate students and faculty, and the desire to expand on Oberlin’s tradition of leadership in science education and historical commitment to diversity. The Director will bring expertise in current STEM research and best practices in science pedagogy within the context of equity, diversity and inclusion. The Director will recruit, train and supervise students as peer-mentors, tutors, and workshop leaders. The Director will foster multidisciplinary connections and transformative approaches that benefit all students in the STEM fields, organize and lead student and faculty workshops as well as provide organizational support for Oberlin’s student research program in the sciences during the summer and academic year. The Director will also have budgetary, assessment, and reporting responsibilities. In consultation with the Dean, the Director may also teach in relevant areas according to specialization. The Director will report to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences or designee. |
| Essential Job Functions | The Director will provide support for the mission of inclusive excellence in STEM through:
• Service on the HHMI Inclusive Excellence leadership team; • Recruiting, training, and supervising peer mentors, peer tutors, and student workshop leaders; • Facilitating campus-wide learning communities and assisting in the initiation and leadership of departmental action and reflection teams; • Supervising and mentoring a post-graduate assistant on the Inclusive Excellence grant; • Coordinating seminars, events, and professional development programming such as an ongoing event series on science and society; • Designing and implementing workshops for students on basic and advanced quantitative skills led by the Director, faculty, and/or student workshop leaders; • Teaching Quantitative and Formal Reasoning (QFR) courses, first-year seminars, or courses in area of specialization per year |

| Required Qualifications | A PhD or equivalent degree in science or education required. Candidates are expected to have strong interpersonal, organizational, managerial and quantitative skills, experience in science pedagogy and inclusive practices, strategic mindset with analytic and technological depth, ability to manage multiple complex tasks as well as the aptitude to communicate effectively and work collaboratively across the campus environment. Expertise in diversity and inclusion is required. Undergraduate teaching experience is highly desirable. A PhD or equivalent degree in science or education required. Candidates are expected to have strong interpersonal, organizational, managerial and quantitative skills, experience in science pedagogy and inclusive practices, strategic mindset with analytic and technological depth, ability to manage multiple complex tasks as well as the aptitude to communicate effectively and work collaboratively across the campus environment. Expertise in diversity and inclusion is required. Undergraduate teaching experience is highly desirable. |
