Upcoming Seminar – Dr. Elisabeth Bik, Misconduct in Biomedical Research

Posted by on Friday, February 25, 2022 in Workshops and Seminars .

Next Wednesday, March 2 at 3:10PM CT, the Evolutionary Studies Initiative will be hosting (virtually) Dr. Elisabeth Bik for the Inaugural J. T. Scopes Lecture, a new lecture series honoring scientists that speak truth to power.

Dr. Bik is a microbiologist that has done outstanding work exposing widespread threats to research integrity in scientific papers, including image manipulation, plagiarism, data manipulation and methodological concerns. One of her latest investigations has been exposing one of the world’s loudest “hydroxychloroquine is an effective treatment against COVID” crusaders. In return, she has received numerous threats, including criminal lawsuits and public disclosure of her home address. She has earned numerous awards for her work, including the 2021 John Maddox Prize.

In her talk she will present her work and show several types of inappropriately duplicated images and other examples of research misconduct. In addition, she will show how to report scientific papers of concern, and how journals and institutions handle such allegations.
