CDC HIV Prevention in Communities of Color Postdoctoral Fellowship Program
A fellowship opportunity is available in the Division of HIV Prevention (DHP) within the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, GA.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.
Research Project: The mission of this fellowship program is to recruit, mentor, and train investigators to conduct domestic HIV and AIDS prevention research in communities of color. The fellows will be located in the Division of HIV Prevention (DHP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), headquartered in Atlanta, GA. The DHP Office of Health Equity (DHP OHE) is lead for the program. The following DHP units will potentially host fellows for the 2023-2025 cycle: DHP OHE, HIV Research Branch; and Translation and Evaluation Branch. Mentors and fellows will collaborate to develop a list of diverse research activities that they will complete together over the two year (subject to funding) training period. These activities will be based on the fellow’s area(s) of interest, training, and expertise and the mission of the program.
Learning Objectives: The activities listed below represent the minimum training opportunities that all fellows will complete:
Conduct or participate in one site visit related to a research project or programmatic activity.
Design, conduct, and interpret an analysis on public health data (activities led by DHP OHE).
Write and submit a scientific manuscript for a peer-reviewed journal (activity led by Branch).
Present a paper or poster at one scientific meeting (activity led by Branch).
Give an oral presentation at a TRIP seminar or Thursday Health Equity Lunch and Learn Session.
Attend monthly scientific meetings on emerging public health issues.
Participate on at least one research project or programmatic activity (as a training opportunity) selected by the mentor and fellow.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: March 6, 2023. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for two years, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.
Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.
Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR), and foreign nationals. Non-U.S. citizen applicants should refer to the Guidelines for Non-U.S. Citizens Details page of the program website for information about the valid immigration statuses that are acceptable for program participation.
ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

Qualifications
The qualified candidate should have received a doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields (Behavioral Sciences, Social Sciences, Epidemiology, Public Health), or be currently pursuing the degree with completion by February 28, 2023. Most recent degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
Applicants with documented training and skills in qualitative and/or quantitative data analyses and documented research expertise or experience in communities of color (African Americans, Latinos/Hispanics, American Indian/Native Americans, Asian/Pacific Islanders) in the United States are preferred.
Successful applicants will be required to re-locate to Atlanta for the 2-year fellowship appointment.
