Manager, Science Operations

POSITION SUMMARY (Basic purpose or primary function of job)

The Manger, Science Operations is responsible for supporting the Senior Vice President of Science Strategy and the individual members of the Science Team with day-to-day operational management, grants management, and event coordination.

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES (Principal responsibilities or job duties)

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  1. Coordinating Department Meetings internally as well as science presentations presented during All Staff meetings, cross-departmental, and new staff orientation.
  2. Managing the administrative side of science grants and contracts in the Proposal Central system and following up with awardees to collect and track all necessary paperwork and deliverables information.
  3. Managing the organization of the Science Team external events and meetings throughout the year (both virtual and in-person).
  4. Coordination of travel calendars and submission of receipts for reimbursement
  5. Managing the databases of experts and contacts for all of our team members
  6. Organizing Research Policies and other important documentation
  7. Updating the content prepared for booths during conferences
  8. Managing the storage and archiving of science materials, report and presentations
  9. Provide virtual support and note taking at web-based meeting, featuring expert speakers on scientific topics of interest to the Foundation and arthritis patients.
  10. The collection of patient contact information for future surveys, reviewer engagements
  11. The coordination of responses to questions coming from the Help Line on science topics
  12. The generation and storage of training materials for new employees and field staff

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration or a health-related field
  2. Prior experience working with arthritis patients and clinical researchers as well as medical doctors considered a plus.
  3. The position requires exemplary organizational, written and oral communications skills. The candidate will have some exposure to external stakeholders.
  4. The position is not responsible for supervising other staff positions but will be interfacing with and supporting the entire Scientific Team.
  5. Occasional travel is required.

Sr. Director, Patient and Health Care Provider Engagement

POSITION SUMMARY (Basic purpose or primary function of job)

The Sr. Director, Patient and Health Care Provider (HCP) Engagement [Sr. Director] is accountable for developing a relationship management strategy for healthcare providers that includes an integrated messaging communications plan to support the organization’s scientific and health advocacy agenda.     This HCP-facing position will work with various departments, including Marketing and Communications, to develop and manage the overall planning of an integrated health outreach and science communications plan, both externally and internally,  for  national interactions with health care practitioners, relevant professional membership organizations, major academic centers and health care delivery institutions, and other non-profit organizations and consortia focused on arthritis research, patient care, and prevention.  The position will also leverage key partners to drive increases in meaningful patient engagement at the both the national and local level, strengthening the value of the programs we offer to patients.

This role resides within the Science Department and will report to the SVP of Science Strategy while maintaining constant communications with the Research VPs in the department, including the VP of Osteoarthritis and the VP of Autoimmune Inflammatory Arthritis. The position will oversee the Director of Patient Engagement.

Responsibilities for the position include: 1) leading the centralization of patient and HCP engagement and relationship management processes and strategy, with a focus on increasing our reach and connections to health care providers working with patients who have osteoarthritis; 2) recruiting Subject Matter Experts for Advisory and Review Panels to enable position statement development and approval, integration of patient education content by actively engaging health care providers, communicating the scientific priorities and health consumer interests of our Foundation, and 3) translating the health care provider and patient engagement focus areas into specific implementation plans and projects to seek revenue opportunities, such as fee for service patient recruitment, focus group, and other programs. This Sr. Director is expected to maintain close communication with the Marketing & Communications, Patient Education and Community Engagement Teams to ensure alignment with enterprise-wide partnership goals and strategy.

Additional responsibilities focus on monitoring the current state and future trends in advancements of arthritis health practices and patients care, ensuring alignment between our foundation’s scientific and mission delivery programs. The position will manage the existing Partner for Patients (P4P) program focused on promoting awareness and referrals of patients to AF.  The Sr. Director will also be tasked with building and maintaining effective relationships with key opinion leaders in rheumatology, OA research, orthopedics, physical therapy, exercise science, pain management, among others, establishing a regular cadence of interaction to ensure engagement in and external feedback for AF activities and working closely with the AF Science Research Leads in every arthritis therapeutic area.

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES (Principal responsibilities or job duties)

  1. Leads the development of enterprise-wide partnership strategies for engaging key major academic centers, health care delivery institutions, and national non-profit HCP membership organizations.
  2. Establishes and achieves effective goals for assigned portfolio of key accounts that are consistent with organization’s overall business plan.
  3. Manages the coordination with the internal stakeholders to achieve partnership business objectives and to fulfill the mutually agreed upon Foundation-wide business commitments.
  4. Maintains current working knowledge of medical trends and specific arthritis patient needs; regularly reviews medical literature and data trends from internal programs focused on patients.
  5. Develops and manages organizational position statements on key topics and emerging issues soliciting external advice from physicians, researchers, and patients.
  6. Directly oversees, develops, and implements a strategic plan for interactions with health care practitioners (including managing the existing P4P Program).
  7. Represents the organization at meetings, scientific conferences, and other events.
  8. Makes significant and proactive contributions to developing a DEI strategy for engaging with diverse patient groups.
  9. Directly interacts with Medical and Scientific Advisory Committee (MSAC) Members and presents updates at MSAC meetings.
  10.  Supervises Director of Patient Engagement.
  11. Creates strategies for increasing the engagement of multiple stakeholders with the Arthritis Foundation.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION

  1. Master’s Degree preferred with a minimum of 8 years of progressive program management experience within a voluntary health organization. An advanced degree from a related field, such as public health, health education, or health promotion, or equivalent combination of education/experience will also be considered acceptable.
  2. Health Science PhD, Health Allied Science Degree or MBA degrees considered a plus.
  3. Demonstrated experience and knowledge of current medical and scientific trends related to arthritis and related conditions.
  4. Previous background and experience working within the fields of orthopedics, surgery, exercise science, rehabilitation, rheumatology or other health-related fields dealing with arthritis patients considered a plus.
  5. Strong experience with tracking and interpreting scientific literature and succinctly summarizing the key points in written and presentation form.
  6. Proven ability to build and maintain positive collaborative relationships with physicians, scientists, other health care providers and key opinion leaders across a range of disciplines.
  7. Proven ability to organize and facilitate roundtables and expert panels to achieve the desired consensus.
  8. Experience supporting the development of corporate strategies and sponsorships that fund health initiatives.
  9. Demonstrated success with facilitating partnerships, including developing plans for the implementation of short- and long-term strategic plans for partnership development, undertaking new initiatives and projects to recruit new partners and develop relationships.
  10. Prior experience and demonstrated ability to develop and implement a communications strategy that galvanizes stakeholders, provides essential information to them, and builds the operational research partnerships.
  11. Prior program management and supervisory experience.
  12. Previous interactions with and experience driving consensus among multiple stakeholder groups

Science Writer

The Science Writer (Writer) is charged with raising the profile of the Arthritis Foundation (AF) scientific leadership and helping communicate more effectively the impact of our important work and scientific investments. The successful candidate will be responsible for translating scientific strategy and initiatives to lay presentations and case statements suitable for dissemination within the Foundation.

The Writer will be responsible for coordinating statements of research impact. The writer will also be responsible for outreach to the research communities to inform Arthritis Foundation positions on complex scientific topics and soliciting input from our medical advisors and experts through managing multiple external committees.

The position should be filled by an individual who possesses a deep understanding of the needs of the many public facing communications efforts of the AF and will proactively seek opportunities to inform those efforts with data and presentations related to Science Department initiatives and their impact. In addition, the Writer will be tasked putting together written proposals to go to other Foundations, major givers and corporate sponsors that might be interested in providing funding for some of our internally developed and externally validated scientific initiatives.

 

Within the Foundation

The Writer will be responsible for seeking out opportunities to communicate progress on Science Department initiatives to internal stakeholder groups, as well as prepare content that the SVP of Science could utilize for Board, MSAC and other important presentations to donors, constituents, and volunteers. The internal groups will need to be provided with write ups on future components of Development, Marketing and Communications, Help & Support, and Advocacy integration opportunities.

 

Outside the Foundation

The Writer will maintain a working relationship with various scientific and clinical professionals and manage one or more committees of external medical and clinical research experts. The responsibilities will also require frequent communication with a select group of the Foundation’s most engaged patient volunteers and the internal Advocacy team.

 

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES (Principal responsibilities or job duties)

  1. Interface directly with AF staff and external audiences of diverse nature for the purpose of articulating the background, scope, goals, and impact of all Science Department projects.
  2. Work closely the Marketing Department to understand their calendar of needs for research communications and be the main Science Team liaison to Marketing.
  3. Proactively identify topics and provide source content in anticipation of relevant deadlines for grant proposal submissions.
  4. Coordinate responses to questions coming through our AF Science email address while collaborating with the AF Help Line Team and other members of the AF Science and Mission Teams to answer questions regarding scientific content.
  1. Serve as subject matter expert and partner with the marketing team in terms of content, compilation of statistics as well as developing multimedia assets that describe the domestic and global impact of arthritis.
  1. Create drafts for white papers and scientific manuscripts, working collaboratively with multiple stakeholders.

 

 

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION

  1. A Bachelor of Science degree in a health-related field, or a Bachelor of Art degree in an unaligned field with significant experience in health and sciences written communication.
  2. 7 years or prior work experience in scientific and medical writing as well as grant proposal preparation
  3. Exemplary written and oral communications skills
  4. Knowledge of contemporary office software packages and possess a willingness to learn new technologies as they become available
  5. Prior exposure to external stakeholders and demonstrated credibility and efficiency interacting with scientific and medical audiences.
  6. Ability to perform duties and responsibilities independently.
