ASPIRE Internship Opportunity:

Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance
International Conference Program Coordinator

801 Roeder Rd.
Suite 750
Silver Spring, MD 20910

The Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance (TS Alliance) is the only US-based national organization dedicated to finding a cure for tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC), while improving the lives of those affected. Founded in 1974, it works to improve quality of life for individuals and families affected by TSC by stimulating and sponsoring research; creating programs, support services and resource information; and developing and implementing public and professional education programs designed to heighten awareness of TSC.

TSC is a genetic disorder that causes tumors to form in vital organs, primarily the brain, eyes, heart, kidney, liver, skin and lungs. However, the neurological aspects of the disease, such as epilepsy, autism, and neuropsychiatric issues are often the most impactful to quality of life. The TS Alliance’s research program is focused on expanding TSC research through stimulating and supporting basic, translational, and clinical research on the various manifestations of TSC, furthering the development of clinical therapies and, ultimately, finding a cure for TSC.

The TS Alliance is seeking an intern volunteer to help in the planning and execution of the biennial International Tuberous Sclerosis Complex Research Conference, which will take place in Toronto from June 20-22, 2019. This three-day event will be held in partnership with Tuberous Sclerosis Canada Sclérose Tubéreuse and the TS Alliance of Mexico. It will bring together approximately 250 researchers and clinicians who will share information on the latest treatment and testing options as well as basic and translational research updates.

The intern will assist in the planning and execution of the Early Career Researcher Symposium, a special career development session convened for and by postdoctoral scholars, fellows, and graduate students in the TSC field. The intern will also assist with organizing oral presentation sessions, developing the meeting program, and event planning logistics for the conference as a whole. This experience will give the intern simultaneous exposure to careers in academia and in non-profit health research/advocacy organizations.

During the conference, the intern will be responsible for taking notes during the scientific sessions and writing a conference summary that will be published on the TS Alliance website and distributed to TS Alliance scientific partners at face-to-face meetings in late 2019 and 2020.

At the TS Alliance, the intern will report to the Science Project Coordinator and Chief Scientific Officer, and will also have the opportunity to work with other members of the Science team. The intern will also build partnerships with the Early Career Researcher Symposium co-chairs, the International TSC Research Conference organizing committee, and the invited scientific speakers.

THE PARTICIPANT WILL:

  • Gain experience in organizing and planning an international conference
  • Gain exposure to the professional culture in a national non-profit scientific foundation
  • Meet and interact with international scientists and clinicians whose work impacts patients with tuberous sclerosis complex

INTERNSHIP DETAILS:

  • Internship will start in December 2018 and by the end of  February and run through July 2019.
  • Internship is remote, unpaid, and part time. For most of the duration of the internship, 2-5 hours per week are expected. More time may be necessary immediately prior to the June conference. During the conference, the intern is expected to be available from 8am to 8pm.
  • The intern must be available to travel to the conference in Toronto from June 19-22, 2019. (The meeting begins the morning of June 20, so staff will arrive the day before.) The intern must also be available to travel to the foundation headquarters in Maryland for a two-day site visit in January.
  • The intern will communicate with the foundation through conference calls and email.
