Assistant Professor of Organic Chemistry
The Department of Chemistry at Kalamazoo College invites applications for a tenure-track appointment in Organic Chemistry starting September 2014. All areas of Organic Chemistry will be considered. Experience in synthesis, computational methods, and/or in material science will be viewed favorably. Teaching responsibilities include courses in the Introductory and Organic Chemistry sequences. The successful applicant will join a research active undergraduate program. A Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry or equivalent training is required. Prior teaching experience at the undergraduate level is desirable. The Shared Passages Seminar Program is a relatively new curricular offering within the K-Plan and candidates will have an opportunity to participate in this college-wide educational program. Candidates who have experience with programs and pedagogical approaches that are especially effective in attracting and retaining women and students of color in the discipline are especially encouraged to apply.
Kalamazoo College is a highly selective, nationally known liberal arts college of approximately 1400 students. The College's K-Plan offers an integrated undergraduate experience that weaves a traditional liberal arts curriculum into domestic and international educational experiences. The College has a distinguished record in undergraduate science education with the Chemistry Department currently ranked 6th nationally in the percentage of graduates earning Ph.D.s in Chemistry. Kalamazoo offers an ACS-accredited B.A. in chemistry and graduates around 30 majors per year. Graduates of the Chemistry Department pursue studies in the health care field, graduate-level work in the discipline, or move directly into industrial positions. With this appointment, the Chemistry Department will expand to seven full-time faculty members. The Department's instrument holdings include a 400 MHz NMR, LC-ESI-MS, GC/MS, UV-vis/Fl, IR, AA, Raman, and HPLC. The Chemistry and Biology Departments occupy the Dow Science Center that features individual student-faculty research laboratories and smart classrooms. The campus is located midway between Chicago and Detroit, and the Kalamazoo area encompasses a community of 225,000, which supports several college and university campuses along with numerous civic arts and cultural associations. Thirty-five miles from Lake Michigan, the area offers many opportunities for outdoor activities.
