The Vanderbilt Science Policy Group (VSPG) will have it’s first meeting on September 1, 2016, at 5 pm in Light Hall Room 306A.
VSPG is an organization open to any graduate students or postdocs who are interested in learning about the process of policy making as well as learning about current scientific legislation. The group will pick proposed legislation for which to advocate for in order to gain experience speaking with legislators on the state and federal level. Interested members of the group will also have to opportunity to participate in a workshop and State Hill Day in coordination with the Legislative Director of the American Heart Association in Tennessee in order to learn about the legislative process at the state level and to obtain information about the best way to advocate using your scientific background (https://yourethecure.org/aha/advocacy/details.aspx?BlogId=4&PostId=4850). The group has typically also coordinated virtual interviews with Vanderbilt Alumni who have gone on to have successful careers in the policy realm. I hope that you will join us for our first meeting so that together we can define goals for the upcoming year and solidify leadership for the group for the 2016-2017 academic year.
