LinkedIn is a very powerful tool in your professional toolbox. One of LinkedIn's most valuable features is that it helps you visualize who you know that knows someone you want to know. (Got that?) Let's say you applied for a job with XYZ company, and LinkedIn shows you that one of your 1st degree connections knows a manager at XYZ company (your 2nd degree connection). With this knowledge in hand, LinkedIn allows you to ask your 1st degree connection to introduce you to the XYZ manager.

Check out our new Beyond the Lab video series showcasing the careers of our PhD and postdoctoral alumni! In Beyond the Lab, the BRET Office of Career Development interviews Vanderbilt PhD and postdoctoral alumni about their career path since leaving VU. Each 10-20 minute video features a different alumnus describing his or her job and providing advice for conducting a job search in that field. We will add new videos each month as they are produced. General interest meeting for Vanderbilt Women in Science group

There has been a recent effort to develop a Women in Science and Engineering Initiative across the Vanderbilt campus. This new venture will host a general interest meeting on Friday, November 1st from 3-5pm in 208 Light Hall. This meeting is open to ALL students, fellows, faculty and staff. The group will give updates on their current efforts, and solicit suggestions and ideas of what you would like to see happen as this initiative develops at Vanderbilt. Additionally, the group will describe ways to help and become involved.

International students and postdocs, you don't want to miss this upcoming workshop on the US Job Search by author Dan Beaudry! On Wednesday, November 13 from 5:00-6:30 p.m. in Wilson Hall Room 103, Dan Beaudry will present, "What Every International Student Should Know about U.S. Employment: A Recruiter's Perspective."
