The BRET Office of Career Development recorded the November session of PhD Career Connections about Science Policy. The video of the presentation by Dr. Kenny Gibbs is now available for viewing online at http://bit.ly/1bhAmIO. Dr. Gibbs discussed his transition from PhD to AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow and then NCI Cancer Prevention Fellow.

Postdoctoral opportunities at the NIH

The NIH Office of Intramurual Training & Education maintains a list of available NIH postdoctoral positions on their website. As in academia, however, not all NIH postdoctoral opportunities are advertised! If you are interested in a particular lab at the NIH, you should reach out directly to the potential postdoctoral mentor even if there is no open postdoctoral position listed on the OITE website.

Graduate students in the biological sciences who have demonstrated initiative and leadership in science policy can apply today for the Emerging Public Policy Leadership Award. Recipients obtain first-hand experience at the interface of science and public policy. Winners will receive a trip to Washington, DC, to participate in the Biological and Ecological Sciences Coalition Congressional Visits Day, an annual two-day event that brings scientists to the nation’s capital to advocate for federal investment in the biological sciences, with a primary focus on the National Science Foundation.

PhD Career Connections on Science Outreach and Education is rescheduled for December 11

The October 2013 PhD Career Connections about Science Outreach & Education has been rescheduled for December 11 at 4:00PM in 415A-D Light Hall. Speakers include alumni Dr. Melissa Fischer and Dr. Kimberly Mulligan, and Dr. Kristin McGraner, Executive Director of Nashville's STEM-focused charter middle school, STEM Preparatory Academy.  Advance registration is requested at http://phdcced-outreach.eventbrite.com. Please note: this event was originally scheduled for October but was cancelled due to a speaker conflict.

The JAX Scholars is a selective postdoctoral fellowship award addressing the national need for research scientists who are accomplished in the broadly defined fields of genetics and genomics. The 2014 JAX Scholar awards will be granted to a new Ph.D. graduates entering a postdoctoral fellowship at The Jackson Laboratory.  A JAX postdoctoral fellow has opportunities to work with the “best” in mammalian genetics – including JAX faculty, Scientific Services, a new training program (as described below) and an established community of postdoctoral trainees.
