Industry Postdoctoral Programs

Administrative Fellowships in Government

  • The Presidential Management Fellows program is a two-year fellowship for outstanding graduate students who will complete their degree requirements in the upcoming year, and who are interested in the leadership and management of public policies and programs.
  • Interagency Oncology Task Force Fellowship: The National Cancer Institute (NCI), National Institutes of Health, and U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), U.S. Department Health and Human Services (DHHS) are offering fellowship training for Ph.D.s, M.D.s, and M.D./Ph.D.s or their equivalents in cancer-related scientific research and research-related regulatory review.
  • FDA Commissioner’s Fellowship Program: two-year fellowship program which provides an opportunity for health professionals and other scientists to receive training and experience at one of the world’s most prestigious regulatory agencies. Under the guidance of a FDA senior scientist preceptor committed to mentoring, fellows will explore a specific aspect of FDA regulatory science. The experience can be in a biology, physics or engineering lab, in a clinical review team, in biostatistics, informatics, epidemiology, risk analysis or other aspects of FDA science.
  • The US Department of Health and Human Services Emerging Leaders Program is a two-year program designed to recruit high potential employees and provide fast track development of leadership and business skills.
  • The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology (S&T) Directorate, Office of University Programs is seeking applications for Postdoctoral Fellows to conduct research at DHS affiliated venues, such as DHS laboratories, DHS Centers of Excellence, and DOE national laboratories with homeland security research capabilities. The intent of the DHS S&T Postdoctoral Fellowship Program is to provide postdoctoral scientists and engineers of unusual promise and ability opportunities for research on problems compatible with the research interests and mission of DHS.
  • The American Society of Human Genetics and National Human Genome Research Institute cosponsor a Genetics and Public Policy Fellowship to give genetics professionals an opportunity to contribute the policy-making process. This unique fellowship provides three separate types of experiences: time spent in the NIH as a part of the Executive branch; a staff position on Capitol Hill serving elected officials and the Legislative branch; and then experience working with ASHG in the non-profit science advocacy sector.
  • The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) is one of the many institutes in the National Institutes of Health that participate in the Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Awards (NRSA) for Individual Postdoctoral Fellowships, also known as the F32. Through these fellowships, NIEHS supports training opportunities for scientists working in the environmental health sciences.

Technology Transfer 

  • The NIH Office of Technology Transfer has postdoctoral fellowship opportunities available in the field of technology transfer. These fellowships enable candidates to combine their science background with training and experience in the technology transfer field. Fellows work with OTT marketing, patenting, and licensing staff, as well as researchers and technology and business development people within and outside NIH. Fellows are required to spend 20% of their training time in an assigned NIH laboratory and 80% at OTT.
  • Several NIH institutes also offer internships or fellowships in technology transfer, including NCI and NIAID.

 

Science Policy

  • The National Academies sponsors the Christine Mirzayan Science & Technology Policy Graduate Fellowship Program, a 10-week summer internship experience for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows interested in the interactions of science, technology, and the government.
  • The AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellowship is a highly competitive, prestigious program for people with a Ph.D. who want to apply their scientific expertise to matters of federal public policy. Fellows work for 2 years in a number of different programmatic areas, including congressional, diplomacy, defense & global security, health education & human services, or energy, environment, agriculture & natural resources.
  • The Hellman Fellowship in Science and Technology Policy, sponsored by the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, is for early-career professionals who are interested in transitioning to a career in science policy and administration.
  • The Fellows Program at the Earth Institute at Columbia University is for individuals dedicated to understanding critical scientific and social issues related to meeting global sustainable development goals. Post-doctoral fellows will join multidisciplinary teams of outstanding, committed scientists from a diverse group of Earth Institute research units and departments across Columbia University, including any of the social sciences, earth sciences, biological sciences, engineering sciences and health sciences.
  • The American Society for Microbiology has a Congressional Science Fellowship program for US citizens who have been society members for at least 1 year, and who will complete their Ph.D. training by September of the fellowship year.
  • The American Institute of Biological Sciences offers a Graduate Student Science Policy Fellowship and Policy Internship Opportunities in Washington D.C.

Science Writing/Journalism

  • The AAAS Mass Media Science & Engineering Fellows Program is a 10-week summer program for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows interested in careers in science writing, journalism, and communication.
  • The Health Communications Internship Program at the National Cancer Institute gives highly qualified graduate students and recent graduate degree recipients the opportunity to participate in vital health and science communications projects in one of the many offices that make up the NCI.  Interns will select an area of emphasis: health communications or science writing. Six-month and one-year internship terms are offered.

Regulatory Affairs/Clinical Research

  • The Fellows Program at Cato Research, a contract research organization, provides training for Ph.D.s who want to transition into clinical research and drug development.

  • The Cancer Prevention Fellowship Program at the National Cancer Institute provides a strong foundation for scientists and clinicians to train in the field of cancer prevention and control. Fellows earn an MPH degree at an accredited university during the first year, followed by mentored research with investigators at the NCI. 
  • The NIH Clinical Center offers two-year fellowships in Bioethics. Fellows conduct mentored conceptual and empirical research related to the ethics of health policy, human subjects research, international research ethics, genetics, or other bioethical topics of interest.

  • The National Academies of Science Research Associateship Program offer postdoctoral fellowship opportunities to US citizens and foreign nationals who want to perform research as guest scientists at over 30 federal labs or research centers around the country.
  • The National Biosafety and Biocontainment Program offers two-year post-doctoral fellowships at the NIH Bethesda Campus, providing a rare opportunity to receive professional training in biosafety and biocontainment.
  • The NASA Postdoctoral Program offers unique research opportunities at NASA Centers, headquarters, and other facilities to national and international individuals who have completed their doctorate degree.
  • The Plum Island Animal Disease Center offers postdoctoral fellowships for people interested in conducting research on foreign animal diseases.
