{"id":234,"date":"2018-07-30T16:27:16","date_gmt":"2018-07-30T16:27:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/medschool.prd.vanderbilt.edu\/career-development\/2018-management-and-business-principles-for-scientists\/"},"modified":"2018-08-03T13:39:43","modified_gmt":"2018-08-03T13:39:43","slug":"2018-management-and-business-principles-for-scientists","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/medschool.vanderbilt.edu\/career-development\/2018-management-and-business-principles-for-scientists\/","title":{"rendered":"2018 Management and Business Principles for Scientists"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Business principles affect all organizations.\u00a0In today\u2019s highly competitive and highly complicated working environments, understanding these principles gives leaders and managers a strategic advantage, enabling them to handle situations more effectively and make decisions more effectively.<\/p>\n<p>In spring semester 2018, the BRET Office of Career Development is offering a\u00a0module for PhD students and postdoctoral fellows from biomedical sciences and chemistry, Management \u00a0and Business\u00a0Principles for Scientists.\u00a0It is ideal for\u00a0trainees interested in:<\/p>\n<p>1) independent research careers in industry or\u00a0academia (running a research lab in academia is often compared to owning a small business).<\/p>\n<p>2) scientific or management careers in academic core facilities or contract research organizations.<\/p>\n<p>3) any career outside the lab which requires\u00a0business acumen!<\/p>\n<p>The module will run Wednesdays from 8:00-10:00 a.m., January 17-April 18, 2018.\u00a0The first few weeks of the module is interactive and didactic. In the second part of the module, participants will break into small teams to consult with the director of a VU Core Facility and\u00a0develop a solution to a business or management challenge faced by the core. This\u00a0project-based approach will give participants the opportunity to put course principles into practice.<\/p>\n<p>This course is free for biomedical sciences and chemistry PhD students and postdoctoral fellows.\u00a0The module is\u00a0limited to 20 participants and applications are being accepted now.
