The\u00a0<em>Communication &amp; Networking<\/em>\u00a0section will be taught by Dr. Ashley Brady. The\u00a0<em>Data Science Case Sessions<\/em>\u00a0will be given by PhD alumni who have pursued careers in data science.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"panel panel-default\">\n<div class=\"panel-heading\" role=\"tab\" id=\"heading4\">\n<h4 class=\"panel-title\"><a role=\"button\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-parent=\"#accordion\" href=\"#item4\" aria-expanded=\"true\" aria-controls=\"item4\"><i class='pull-right fa fa-chevron-circle-down' aria-hidden='true'><\/i> What will we do in the Data Science Essentials module?<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"item4\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse\" role=\"tabpanel\" aria-labelledby=\"heading4\">\n<div class=\"panel-body\">\n<p>The module has three parts (see the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medschool.vanderbilt.edu\/career-development\/syllabus-for-data-science-essentials\/\">syllabus<\/a>). It will be a mix of interactive lectures, data science projects with publicly available data sets, small group discussions, case studies with data science professionals, site visits to area employers, and group attendance at a local data science Meetup.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"panel panel-default\">\n<div class=\"panel-heading\" role=\"tab\" id=\"heading5\">\n<h4 class=\"panel-title\"><a role=\"button\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-parent=\"#accordion\" href=\"#item5\" aria-expanded=\"true\" aria-controls=\"item5\"><i class='pull-right fa fa-chevron-circle-down' aria-hidden='true'><\/i>What computer hardware\/software do I need?<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"item5\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse\" role=\"tabpanel\" aria-labelledby=\"heading5\">\n<div class=\"panel-body\">\n<p>Participants will need a laptop computer that they can bring to each\u00a0Introduction to Data\u00a0Science\u200b\u00a0session. You will use the laptop\u00a0in- and out-of-class to\u00a0complete a small data science project using open-source software that is freely available.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"panel panel-default\">\n<div class=\"panel-heading\" role=\"tab\" id=\"heading6\">\n<h4 class=\"panel-title\"><a role=\"button\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-parent=\"#accordion\" href=\"#item6\" aria-expanded=\"true\" aria-controls=\"item6\"><i class='pull-right fa fa-chevron-circle-down' aria-hidden='true'><\/i>How much programming and statistics experience do I need? <\/a><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"item6\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse\" role=\"tabpanel\" aria-labelledby=\"heading6\">\n<div class=\"panel-body\">\n<p>No specialized programming experience is needed. Participants who are new to programming will be asked to take\u00a0a free, online short course to learn some basics about Python,\u00a0before\u00a0the start of the\u00a0Introduction to Data Science\u00a0section. It will take about 4 hours to complete.\u00a0As for stats experience, the exposure you had as an undergraduate or graduate student in STEM will be sufficient. The class won&#8217;t meet in November or over the university&#8217;s winter break. This module is limited to 16 people in order to maximize interaction between the instructor and students.
