{"id":6660,"date":"2018-10-23T15:28:23","date_gmt":"2018-10-23T15:28:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/medschool.prd.vanderbilt.edu\/career-development\/?page_id=6660"},"modified":"2025-09-25T08:20:57","modified_gmt":"2025-09-25T13:20:57","slug":"overview-of-aspire-internships","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/medschool.vanderbilt.edu\/career-development\/overview-of-aspire-internships\/","title":{"rendered":"Overview of ASPIRE Internships"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>The ASPIRE program facilitates opportunities for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to conduct internships and gain hands-on experience with a project in a professional capacity.<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Part-time internships can be up to eight hours per week and must not interfere with a trainee\u2019s research progress in the lab. When a part-time internship is compensated, the compensation must comply with effort reporting requirements by the trainee\u2019s funding source.<\/li>\n<li>Full-time internships are also a possibility for graduate students. If full-time internships last more than two weeks, graduate students will consult their mentor and Director of Graduate Studies to take a brief Leave of Absence from the Ph.D. program.\u00a0 Employers will be encouraged to compensate full-time internships at a rate at, or above, a student stipend and health insurance.<\/li>\n<li>Except in very unusual circumstances where a student\u2019s internship relates directly to their dissertation research, internships will not carry academic credit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Eligibility<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Students must have completed their qualifying exams<\/li>\n<li>Postdoctoral fellows will be eligible throughout their training, pending approval of a leave of absence by their research advisor and funding source if the commitment reduces the ability of the postdoc to maintain full-time effort.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Students and postdocs who have participated in previous ASPIRE programs and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medschool.vanderbilt.edu\/career-development\/events\/\"><strong>BRET Office of Career Development events<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0will be given preference in selection to\u00a0the internship\u00a0program.<\/p>\n<p>The ultimate decision to hire an intern rests with the employer who needs to comply with their company\u2019s recruitment and hiring practices. Thus, trainees will apply for internships and negotiate directly with the employer. However, the ASPIRE program will help trainees identify internship opportunities and navigate the internship application and interview process.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>ASPIRE travel scholarships are available to trainees to help offset travel expenses that may be associated with doing an internship. Please see the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/medschool.vanderbilt.edu\/career-development\/aspire-travel-scholarship-program\/\">ASPIRE travel scholarship<\/a><\/strong> page\u00a0for application information and policies.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><strong>Expectations<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>To ensure a high quality learning experience, internship participants will develop an internship project plan describing the intern\u2019s role, project, learning objectives, and dates of participation. The internship plan will be signed by the internship sponsor and the trainee\u2019s faculty advisor and submitted to the ASPIRE program office in advance. Following the internship, the trainee and the sponsor will provide feedback to the ASPIRE program about the internship experience.
