Lorena Infante Lara, PhD<\/strong><\/em>
\nLorena Infante Lara, PhD, was a graduate student in Vanderbilt\u2019s IGP, and did her dissertation work in the lab of Neil Osheroff in the Department of Biochemistry. Lorena participated in the AAAS Mass Media Fellowship during her fourth year and was assigned to work at Univision<\/span><\/a> in Miami during the summer of 2017. While at Univision, Lorena wrote articles about health and science, and learned that science writing for a living was the path for her. After graduating in early 2019, Lorena accepted a position as the Communications and Social Media Manager for the Office of the Dean of Basic Sciences at Vanderbilt, where she currently works.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

\n<\/strong>“I am a 6<\/span>th<\/sup><\/span> year PhD student in Vivian Gama\u2019s lab in the Cell and Developmental Biology Department. During graduate school, I enjoyed prepping fellowship applications, writing commentaries and reviews, and presenting my research \u2013 however, I really didn\u2019t like doing bench work. Eventually I discovered science journalism. I found opportunities to write at Vanderbilt, the American Society for Cell Biology blog, the NIH BEST blog, and Scientific American to get a feel for journalistic writing. I loved it, and thanks to the BRET office and Lorena Lara Infante (another panelist here) I discovered the AAAS Mass Media Fellowship. I was fortunate to be selected as a fellow at STAT News this summer where I wrote nine stories about a myriad of topics. Now, I am looking for opportunities in science journalism when I graduate at the beginning of next year.”<\/span><\/em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n
