ASPIRE On the Road<\/strong><\/em> is an initiative of the Vanderbilt ASPIRE Program aimed at broadening the training experiences of biomedical Ph.D. graduate students and postdocs by organizing site visits to companies and organizations to help our trainees make well-informed career decisions.<\/p>\n

These quarterly site visits will provide postdoctoral fellows and graduate students the opportunity to learn about different career options by touring a variety of workplaces and meeting professionals in a range of roles.  We intend to arrange site visits at local biotech start-ups, clinical research organizations, healthcare accelerators, universities and more. <\/p>\n

The inaugural ASPIRE on the Road <\/strong><\/em>will be a visit to Fisk University in Nashville, TN.  Fisk University is a small, historically black liberal arts university with a history of excellence in academics through teaching, research, and service.  It is Nashville’s oldest institution of higher education and conveniently located less than two miles from Vanderbilt. <\/p>\n

Through this opportunity, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows will spend a half-day on Fisk’s campus to learn about teaching-focused academic faculty careers, hear from key leadership at Fisk, observe a class, meet with faculty members over lunch and tour the campus, classrooms and labs. A maximum of 8 trainees will be selected to participate. <\/p>\n

8:30-8:45         Students and postdocs arrive on Fisk's Campus<\/p>\n

9:00-9:30         Meet with Princilla Morris, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Chemistry;
\n                        Executive Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning<\/p>\n

9:30-10:15       Meet with Lee Limbird, Ph.D., Dean of Graduate Studies,
\n                        Professor of Chemistry, and Biochemistry and Molecular Biology<\/p>\n

10:30-11:30     Observe Molecular Methods Course with Brian Nelms, Ph.D.,
\n                        Assistant Professor of Biology<\/p>\n

11:30-12:00     Meet with Brian Nelms, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Biology<\/p>\n

12:00-1:00       Lunch with faculty (TBD)<\/p>\n

1:00-1:30         Tour of labs\/facilities<\/p>\n

  • Applicants must be a current Vanderbilt University PhD student or a current postdoctoral fellow.<\/li>\n
  • All PhD students should be in their fourth year or beyond<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
