Neurology
The Student Interest Group in Neurology (SIGN) is a network of 130+ chapters in medical schools across the U.S. and Canada which was started by the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) in 1998. SIGN fosters medical student interest in neurology by providing opportunities to participate in clinical, research, and service activities in neurology, and increasing the student’s neurologic knowledge.
The branch of SIGN at Vanderbilt is a very active group that is sponsored by the Department of Neurology and the AAN. We have over 100 members, including both MD and MD/PhD students. Throughout the academic year, we organize lectures and events relating to the practice of both academic and clinical neurology as well as talks about neurologic subspecialties. We offer several tours including the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit, the Sleep Disorders Center, and the Stroke Imaging Center. We also provide opportunities for students to shadow attendings in a variety of our specialty clinics. In addition, we help students get involved in clinical neurology and basic neuroscience research projects.
