2024 Annual Retreat May 6, 2024 Location Cheekwood Gardens

The CPBP Spring Retreat will be held on May 6, 2024 at Cheekwood Gardens, Nashville TN.  The keynote speaker will be Dr. Pamela Silver, Elliot T and Onie H Adams Professor of Biochemistry and Systems Biology Wyss Institute of Biologically Inspired Engineering, Harvard University

2023 Annual Retreat June 7, 2023 Location Cheekwood Gardens.

The CPBP Spring Retreat was held on June 7, 2023 at Cheekwood Gardens, Nashville TN.  The keynote speaker was  Dr. Jason McLellan, Professor of Molecular Bioscience and Robert A. Welch Chair in Chemistry from The University of Texas at Austin.

CPBP Fall 2021 Retreat

The CPBP Student Fall 2021 Retreat was on Thursday August 19 in the downstairs lecture hall (044/048) of the ESB/Wondry building!

The day was full with programming updates shared by Program Director Walter Chazin and breakout sessions for groups to attend on different topics .  Graduate School Life Coach Stacey Satchell presented and along with faculty representing each track of the program.  Students presented posters and the day ended with a social hour.

CPBP 2019 Spring Retreat

The CPBP 2019 Spring Retreat was held on Thursday May 23, 2019.  Wyatt Center, Vanderbilt University Campus.   The Keynote speaker for the student retreat this year was  Dr. Hana El-Samad, from the University of California, San Francisco.

The retreat provides CPB students and faculty an opportunity to appreciate the breadth of research being conducted in the program. For students it helps to gain experience in presenting scientific work in a scientifically critical but personally supportive setting; and it fosters a sense of community within the program. It is our major program-wide event, and attendance is required of all students. The academic program includes poster and oral presentations from each student and a keynote presentation whose research represents one of the four programmatic tracks.

 

2018

The CPBP 2018 Spring Retreat was held on May 18, 2018.  The retreat was held at the Commons Center on the Vanderbilt University Campus.

Our Keynote speaker was Dr. Peter Basser, Associate Scientific Director for Imaging, Behavior, and Genomic Integrity within the NICHD IRP. https://irp.nih.gov/pi/peter-basser. Dr. Basser is primarily known the invention, development, and clinical implementation of MR diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), and several other quantitative MRI methods for performing in vivo MRI histology or “microstructure imaging”.  These include CHARMED and AxCaliber MRI, which measures the mean axon diameter and axon diameter distribution, respectively, within white matter fascicles, and double Pulsed-Field Gradient (dPFG) MRI methods, which are used to elucidate distinct microstructural features of both gray and white matter in the brain.

2017

Our annual retreat was held on May 24, 2017 at the Student Life Center on the Vanderbilt University Campus. The speaker for the annual CPB retreat featured Dr. Benjamin Cravatt of the Scripps Institute.  Dr. Cravatt’s laboratory specializes in global analysis of enzyme function with the stated purpose of identifying therapeutic targets in human disease.  The Cravatt Lab has been on the cutting edge of both technology development and basic science discovery of the enzymatic regulation of chemical signaling.

2016

The CPB 2016 Annual Retreat was held on June 8th at Featheringill Hall on the campus of Vanderbilt University.  Our keynote speaker this year was, Dr. Roger Craig, from the University of Massachusetts Medical School.  The retreat committee this year included:  Sanjay Mishra, Chuck Herring, Christian Myers, James C. Pino, Kevin L. Jagessar and Abigail Searfoss.

2015

The CPB 2015 Annual Retreat was held on May 20, 2015 at Green Door Gourmet in Nashville, TN. Our keynote speaker this year was, Dr. Peter Sorger, Harvard University Medical School and the Department of Biological Engineering and the Center for Cancer Research at MIT.

2014

On May 22,2014, the CBP celebrated its annual retreat at Alumni Hall with keynote speaker, Dr. Kathy Ferrara, University of California, Davis.  The retreat was organized by students  BettyAnn Chodkowski, Aliya Gifford, Emily Jones, Sanjay Mishra, Chrystal Starbird, and Yan Xia.

 

2013

On May 21, 2013, the annual retreat held at Cheekwood Botanical Gardens was kicked off by keynote speaker Dr. George Whitesides, Harvard University.The retreat was organized by students Sonja Brooks, Elizabeth Dong, Lewis Kraft, and Aliya Gifford.

 

2012

On May 16, 2012, the CPB celebrated its third annual retreat at Cheekwood Botanical Gardens with the company of keynote speaker Dr. Ian Wilson, Scripps Research Institute.  The retreat was organized by students Sonja Brooks, Elizabeth Dong, Stephanie DeLuca, Lewis Kraft, and Gage Matthews.

 

2011

On April 18, 2011, the annual CPB retreat was held at the Nashville Zoo.  The student organizing committee invited keynote speaker Dr. James Prestegard, University of Georgia.  The retreat was organized by students Julia Koehler, Stephanie DeLuca, Sonja Brooks, Elizabeth Dong, Noelle Holmes, and Jennifer Whisenant.

 

2010

On April 14, 2010, the first annual retreat was held at the Richland Country Club.  The student-led retreat committee invited Dr. Henry Lester, California Institute of Technology as its keynote speaker for the inaugural event.  The committee was comprised of students Steffen Lindert, Julia Koehler, Emily Rubinson, and Jennifer Whisenant.
