Biostatistics Program Leader:

Tatsuki Koyama, Ph.D.
Associate Professor of Biostatistics

Services:

The Vanderbilt Center for Quantitative Sciences team works with Medical School investigators to:

  • Define objectives and endpoints
  • Analyze pilot data
  • Select an appropriate design
  • Compute an adequate sample size with concern for the clinical as well as statistical significance
  • Estimate the time required to accrue the total patient population
  • Specify the statistical methods
  • Prepare statistical sections of the grant and protocol applications

Objectives:

The members of the Vanderbilt Center for Quantitative Sciences endeavor to:

  • Provide consultative services for Vanderbilt Medical School investigators in the statistical design, conduct, and analysis of studies
  • Collaborate in funded research efforts initiated by Vanderbilt Medical School laboratory and clinical investigators, by providing statistical expertise in study design, power and sample size analysis; data analysis; interpretation of results; and writing of manuscripts
  • Provide relational database design, data tracking, forms, queries, and reports for investigator-initiated clinical trial databases or laboratory study databases
  • Develop and evaluate statistical methods for experimental design and data analysis
  • Work with the Vanderbilt Medical School Clinical Trials Shared Resource in the development of a new research project database to maintain data quality control and ensure timely data capture
  • Train Vanderbilt Medical School investigators in research design and data analysis through seminars, short statistical workshops, and individual sessions on statistical methods

Services:

The Vanderbilt Center for Quantitative Sciences team works with Medical School investigators to:

  • Define objectives and endpoints
  • Provide consultative services for bioinformatics-related project design.
  • Provide consultative services for bioinformatics data analysis
  • Provide consultative services for database and software development
  • Analyze pilot data
  • Prepare bioinformatics sections of the grant and protocol applications

Objectives:

The members of the Vanderbilt Center for Quantitative Sciences endeavor to:

  • Provide consultative services for Vanderbilt Medical School investigators in bioinformatics data analysis
  • Collaborate in funded research efforts initiated by Vanderbilt Medical School laboratory and clinical investigators, by providing bioinformatics expertise in data analysis; data interpretation; hypothesis generating; and writing of manuscripts
  • Develop and evaluate computational methods and software tools for bioinformatics data analysis
  • Train Vanderbilt Medical School investigators in bioinformatics resources and data analysis methods through seminars, short workshops, and individual sessions

Systems Biology Program Leader:

The Vanderbilt Center for Quantitative Sciences team works with Medical School investigators to:

  • Define objectives and endpoints
  • Provide consultative services for omics (genomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics) data analysis
  • Provide consultative services for data integration and pathway and network analysis
  • Provide consultative services for systems biology databases and software packages
  • Analyze pilot data
  • Prepare computational systems biology sections of the grant and protocol applications

Objectives:

The members of the Vanderbilt Center for Quantitative Sciences endeavor to:

  • Provide consultative services for Vanderbilt Medical School investigators in data integration and systems biology
  • Collaborate in funded research efforts initiated by Vanderbilt Medical School laboratory and clinical investigators, by providing systems biology expertise in data integration; data analysis; data interpretation; hypothesis generating; and writing of manuscripts
  • Develop and evaluate computational methods for data integration and analysis
  • Train Vanderbilt Medical School investigators in systems biology resources and data analysis methods through seminars, short workshops, and individual sessions

 

Data Coordinating Service Program Leader:

Lynne D. Berry, Ph.D.
Deputy Director, Vanderbilt Center for Quantitative Sciences

Services:

The CQS Data Coordinating Services (DCS) team works with Medical School investigators to:

  • Define technical requirements and expectations for data management, including database design and routine data reporting.
  • Develop appropriate data dictionary and data entry manual to ensure comprehensive documentation of data elements in support of data collection goals.
  • Develop custom data collection, management, and storage solutions, appropriate to the needs of each project
  • Maintain ongoing communication and service to provide training on data entry, ensure IRB compliance, address any issues or bugs, and ensure data quality control
  • Provide routine and custom data reports and summary statistics as data accrues

 Objectives:

The members of the CQS DCS endeavor to:

  • Provide data management expertise to fill this critical gap in many research programs
  • Assist in improving the quality and efficiency of biomedical research, by providing project-centric data management solutions
  • Improve the quantity and quality of knowledge gained from data, by providing data management solutions that promote and optimize data integrity

 

Health Services & Outcomes Research Program Leader:

Services:

 The CQS Health Services Research Team provides analytical support to Vanderbilt HSR and outcome research investigators: 

  • Consult to optimize study design and performance.
  • Compute sample size and estimate analytical power.
  • Develop plans for appropriate statistical analysis.
  • Perform statistical analysis.
  • Execute interim analyses.
  • Write statistical results for publication.
  • Develop publication quality tables and figures.
  • Ensures high quality data collection collaborating with the CQS Data Coordinating Service.
  • Provide education in fundamentals in biostatistics in HSR and outcome research and introduction to basic epidemiological concepts.
  • Provide expertise in utilizing large observational databases for epidemiological studies.
