The Vanderbilt DBMI Training Program is uniquely positioned to prepare future leaders in the field with a comprehensive understanding gained through a strong foundation in the principles and theory of biomedical informatics, and participation in mentored scientific research and large-scale applied informatics development and implementation projects. The research-focused MS and PhD in Biomedical Informatics provide an in-depth experience with cutting-edge research through collaboration on research projects within the Department of Biomedical Informatics and with the diverse faculty of Vanderbilt's basic, clinical, and engineering sciences departments. New for Fall 2016 is the Big Biomedical Data Science (BIDS) Program, a Data Science track within the PhD program.Vanderbilt DBMI’s new MS in Applied Clinical Informatics (MSACI) is designed to develop leaders who are prepared to advance the science and practice of clinical informatics. Vanderbilt’s ACGME-accredited Fellowship Program in Clinical Informatics is a two-year program with both didactic (MSACI) and rotational training. This two-year fellowship is open to physicians who are ABMS board certified or board eligible in a primary specialty (e.g., Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Anesthesiology) upon starting the fellowship. We also continue to offer research-intensive non-degree postdoctoral fellowships and short-term research experiences.

DBMI has offered NLM- and VA-funded research MS and PhD degrees in Biomedical Informatics since 2012. These degree programs include a core curriculum of courses in biomedical informatics and the foundation disciplines of computer science, biomedicine, and research methodology. MS & PhD students pursue concentrated study in one of two application domains, broadly defined, clinical informatics, translational bioinformatics; and two additional concentrations in development, clinical research informatics and biomedical data science.
In 2016 we are launching an MS in Applied Clinical Informatics (distance learning for the working professional) and an ACGME-accredited Clinical Informatics Fellowship. Our new MSACI will provide innovative CI education for working professionals in the health care field with graduates assuming leadership roles in the application and innovation of clinical informatics nationally. This program is the didactic training component for Clinical Informatics Fellows. Faculty-mentored practicum experiences with our Health IT operational teams will be critical to all CI trainees’ development as clinical informatics practitioners who improve patient care through the application of informatics tools.
