Financial Aid Applications may be submitted beginning in October; you will be asked to use the prior-prior year's tax return data.
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) must be completed annually by all students who are applying for federal student loans. Since graduate/professional students are considered independent for the federal loans, only the student/spouse sections must be completed. The FAFSA Vanderbilt University school code number is 003535.
To determine demonstrated need for institutional scholarships, first-year MD students should submit the the PROFILE application and include parental information (code 0670).
Once you have submitted the FAFSA or Renewal FAFSA and it has been processed, you will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) from the federal processor. If you provide your email address, you will receive the SAR electronically in as quickly as 24 hours after processing your FAFSA. If you do not receive the SAR, you should check on the status of your application. You may do so by calling (800) 433-3243 or check online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Keep the SAR for your records. Vanderbilt will receive the SAR electronically from the federal processor.
International medical students may apply for institutional funding by submitting the PROFILE application to determine eligibility. Parental information must be included. To search for outside scholarships, please visit www.edupass.org/finaid (Financial Aid for International Students). Please contact Student Financial Services for information regarding a private loan that does not require a U.S. credit-worthy cosigner.
To continue receiving assistance, students must maintain satisfactory academic progress toward their degree.
The Financial Aid Award Notification identifies those programs for which the student is eligible. Each student will be awarded funds from the various programs to meet the total estimated cost of attendance, with the exception of international students.
When you receive the Award Notification, you may reduce or decline any or all of the loans offered by sending an email to MedFinaid@vanderbilt.edu.
The award is subject to change in the event that you receive additional aid not reflected in the Award Notification. If you receive additional aid from any source, you are required to notify Student Financial Services. The receipt of additional aid may result in a reduction of funds awarded if total resources exceed the cost of attendance.
Departmental scholarships, grants, tuition awards, fellowships, etc., if awarded, are taken into consideration when determining your eligibility for financial aid and should be reflected on the Award Notification. Stipends may be considered as financial aid as well. If the stipend is considered as employment, it is not considered as financial aid.
The financial aid award is for one academic year. You must reapply each year for the federal loans. Renewal of prior years' federal loans is not automatic.

The Federal Direct Graduate PLUS Loan and private loans require a credit check. It is important to maintain credit worthiness in order to qualify for borrowing needed for your medical education as well as in future years. It is recommended that you request a copy of your credit report from a credit bureau to make sure there are no problems. If there are problems, then perhaps they can be resolved prior to applying for loans. You may request a free credit report at www.annualcreditreport.com.
Having good credit is vital to many of life's most important purchases, including financing a home or car, and some employers will not offer jobs to candidates with poor credit.
Funds will be disbursed equally among the periods of enrollment by electronic funds transfer (EFT), and will automatically be credited to your student account. You will receive an email notifying you when your funds have been credited to your student account. You have 14 days in which to cancel loan funds by notifying us in writing.
If your financial aid is more than your Vanderbilt charges on your student account, a refund for the credit balance will be automatically generated to pay toward your living expenses. If you do not sign up for direct deposit, a paper check will be mailed to your local address within 5-7 business days.
Refunds are anticipated to be generated on the following dates:
