Barb Jacobson

Assistant Professor, Hearing and Speech Sciences


Barbara Jacobson, PhD. is an associate professor in the Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She has been working in the area of voice disorder assessment and treatment since 1986. Prior to coming to the Vanderbilt Voice Center, Dr. Jacobson was director of the Division of Speech-Language Sciences & Disorders at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. Her undergraduate degree is in linguistics from the University of Cincinnati. She also obtained her masters and doctoral degrees in communication disorders from the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Jacobson developed (along with other colleagues) the Voice Handicap Index (VHI). She is the co-editor (with Alex Johnson) of Medical Speech Language Pathology, 2nd ed. (Thieme). Her research and clinical interests include functional outcomes in voice disorders, voice manifestations of neurological disease, and quality of life measures.
