I study a severe form of epilepsy, Dravet syndrome, and seek to characterize the mutations in several different genes that cause DS using biochemical and electrophysiological techniques. If there are differences between the various gene mutations at this level–despite the same clinical outcome–different treatments may be appropriate for each gene affected. DS is very treatment-resistant and the variation in cellular pathology may partially explain this.
