Using Quantum-dot Technology to Track Protein Movement

Proper neurological function gets compromised when proteins involved in the regulation of neurotransmitters such as dopamine, serotonin, and acetylcholine undergo mutation. Diseases such as ADHD, schizophrenia, and drug addiction result when this occurs. The overall goal of the lab is to determine molecular mechanisms of prominent protein channels and receptors involved with these neurotransmitters. Using quantum-dot technology, these proteins can be individually tracked via synthetic probes that can bind to the protein of interest. With this information, we hope to create fundamental information that can aid in designing efficient therapeutics aimed to correct deviations from proper protein movement and function.
