Why did you choose Vanderbilt/What do you like most about Vanderbilt?
The positivity and support among the students, faculty, and staff and the emphasis on wellness (including the colleges!) and maintaining our personal well-being were the most significant features leading me to choose Vanderbilt. The camaraderie of the Vanderbilt community, along with the friendly and entertaining atmosphere of Nashville, made the idea of living outside Texas for the first time a more exciting one.

About Me
I was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas, and graduated from The University of Texas at Austin after completing a five-year dual degree program. While in college, I studied abroad in a few different programs and hope to continue traveling and exploring new places, both for academic opportunities and for personal enjoyment. Apart from traveling, I enjoy exercising (especially barre classes), playing golf, music, dancing, reading, cooking/baking, watching movies, spending time with friends, and going outdoors. Outside of science, I'm interested in the field of ethics and, more recently, business and policy; and I hope to complete a research project integrating these topics with clinical research. On campus, I served as a Shade Tree Patient Health Educator last year, and I currently serve on the Curriculum Committee and participate in VMS Dance, the Medical Ethics, Law, and Policy organization, SNMA, and the Microbes and Defense Academic Society.

Why did you choose Vanderbilt/What do you like most about Vanderbilt?
I was an undergrad at Vanderbilt and clearly couldn't get enough! Vanderbilt is unique in that it demands an extremely high standard of excellence, while maintaining a genuinely warm culture. The school of medicine in particular supports a strong feeling of community that makes a huge difference through the challenges of medical school.

About Me
I love Nashville. Nashville has amazing FOOD! It's always fun finding new restaurants to try, especially restaurants with live music. I also enjoy working with kids, so I have stayed involved in an undergrad organization here called Camp Kesem that puts on a free summer camp for kids with parents who have cancer. I took a gap year between graduating and medical school. During that time, I worked in sales and marketing, spent time in California, and traveled to Nicaragua to work at an orphanage.

The curriculum attracted me initially, as I loved the idea of getting out of the classroom and into the clinical environment after just one year. Once I visited I fell in love with Nashville!

About Me:
I took three years off to work on a psychology study, do a postbac program, and work in health policy before coming to medical school. I'm a pilot and regularly check out Tennessee from the skies. I'm also involved in curriculum activities, working with the administration to help improve our experience, and help run the Ambassadors program.

Why did you choose Vanderbilt/What do you like most about Vanderbilt?
What sealed the deal for me was Second Look Weekend. Could not have picked a more fun, diverse, and friendly class to spend my next four years with.

About Me:
I love to be active, whether that be lifting, playing basketball and soccer, or walking around Nashville. I also like to read and play nerdy video games. I love BBQ and hate brunch. I cut my own hair and am trying to improve my cooking skills. I am also a clinic coordinator at Shade Tree.

The Wellness Program is one of the best parts of Vanderbilt, especially College Cup. Also, our free clinic, Shade Tree, is pretty unique in that we can dispense our own medications and provide a number of different specialty services.

About Me:
In my free time, I enjoy playing tennis, eating, doing puzzles, and trying new restaurants. I also picked up running when I started medical school and am trying to figure out how to enjoy it. On campus, I'm involved with Shade Tree Trot, Shade Tree Clinic, and the Wellness Program.

Why did you choose Vanderbilt/What do you like most about Vanderbilt?
I already knew that I liked Vanderbilt because of its commitment to producing competent and caring physicians, and because it's close to home for me. But when I came for my interview, I noticed that the students genuinely seemed happy to be here; that's what left the best impression on me.

About Me:
I sing and beatbox with the medical school's a cappella group, Radial Grooves. I'm also a part of the Student National Medical Association, an organization focused on the eradication of health disparities. In my spare time, I enjoy cooking, dancing, and working on various music projects.

 Career Interests: Otolaryngology, Neurosurgery, Plastics

Why did you choose Vanderbilt/What do you like most about Vanderbilt?
I chose Vanderbilt because of the closely-knit, family-like atmosphere that exists between the med students and faculty alike. Everyone wants everyone to succeed, so the lack of competition has had a huge impact on maintaining such a positive learning environment. Also, I came to love Nashville (the music, the food, the open-mindedness, etc.) during my four years as an undergrad here, so I quickly realized that I wasn't quite ready to leave yet.

About Me:
As a first year, I spend a lot of my time working in Vanderbilt's Shade Tree Clinic as a Patient Health Educator. Aside from schoolwork, I enjoy exploring new restaurant openings, craft breweries, and free concerts (Nashville's an awesome place for doing all of these things). Lights on the Lawn is one of my favorite things about Nashville - definitely give it a Google. When I get a long weekend, you can catch me hiking somewhere in the Smokies or kayaking on the Harpeth.

Why did you choose Vanderbilt/What do you like most about Vanderbilt?
I came to Vanderbilt as an undergraduate for a summer clinical research internship three years ago and fell in love with the culture, students, faculty, and city. Everyone is so friendly here and will go out of their way to help you succeed. After that summer, I knew I had to come back for medical school.

About Me:
I am originally from the Pacific Northwest and love the great outdoors. Tennessee, with its array hiking, boating, fishing and camping, is a second home away from home. I enjoy spending time with friends, tearing up the Broadway honkytonks, or chatting it up over dinner at one of Nashville's many excellent restaurants. I also like playing guitar, singing and playing intramural sports. On campus, I am involved in several organizations including SNMA and REMEDY, and am involved in research projects in cardiology and hepatology.

Jeanette Matheiu.jpg Vanderbilt Email: jeannette.l.mathieu@vanderbilt.edu

 Undergraduate University: Vanderbilt University

 Undergraduate Major: Piano Performance

Career Interests: Pediatric Cardiology, Pediatric ICU, Neurology

Why did you choose Vanderbilt/What do you like most about Vanderbilt?
I chose Vanderbilt for the culture of the institution; Vanderbilt medical students are some of the happiest and most active people I've met, and the school is truly committed to promoting wellness and a balanced lifestyle. Also, Nashville offers the perks of a large city - great restaurants, awesome music scene, amazing coffee, and numerous cultural events - while still being small enough that it's easy to get around, rent is relatively cheap, and you can be out on an awesome hike completely removed from civilization in less than an hour.

About Me:
I grew up in Winchester, Virginia and completed my undergraduate studies at Vanderbilt's Blair School of Music, where I majored in piano performance. I spent a year after graduation doing protein spectroscopy research at Vanderbilt, then began medical school. On a typical weekend I am racing in 5ks or half marathons around Nashville, running in Percy Warner or Shelby Park, cooking feasts, trying out new restaurants, continuing the never-ending search for Nashville's best coffee shop, playing piano, or going to concerts. On campus, I am the Running Club President, the MAPS liaison for SNMA, the Events Chair for the Global Health Organization, a Shade Tree Clinic volunteer, and a member of the Shade Tree Trot planning committee.

Why did you choose Vanderbilt/What do you like most about Vanderbilt?
I came to Vanderbilt because of the curriculum, the city, and most of all, the people. After I came for Second Look, I knew that this was a community that I wanted to be a part of and I knew that I would be supported by my peers and faculty. Vandy has definitely lived up to my expectations.

About Me:
During my gap years, I worked as a research associate doing clinical trials for Womens Health. Last year, as a VMS I, I was a Patient Health Educator at Shade Tree, helped plan Second Look Weekend, and I went on the annual trip to Nicaragua as a part of a global health course, where I got to sled down the face of a volcano. This year, I am enjoying being more involved in patient care on the wards and I am on the Transitions Council for MD Ambassadors. I like to spend my free time running in the Belmont area or at Percy Warner Park, cooking, hanging out with friends, and Netflix-ing the night away.

Why did you choose Vanderbilt/What do you like most about Vanderbilt?
I like the collaborative and friendly environment Vandy has to offer. The student body is genuinely happy to be here. I also love the pass/fail system for the pre-clinical year.

About Me:
Lou Posey is from Memphis, TN. He is a huge college football fan that enjoys going to the Vandy Rec Center frequently to workout. He also loves grabbing food at almost any restaurant in Nashville. If you have any questions about the Air Force HPSP, he is the person to ask!

Why did you choose Vanderbilt/What do you like most about Vanderbilt?
What initially drew me to Vanderbilt was the new curriculum that provided an entire year of additional clinical experience. Now that I'm here, what I like most are the faculty, who are passionate about teaching, and my fellow students, who make collaborative learning especially fun.

About Me:
In my spare time, I am an avid IM frisbee and softball player. I have also made it my mission to try as many new bars and restaurants around Nashville as is humanly possible. I'm particularly fond of those serving Nashville's signature dish: Hot Chicken.

Why did you choose Vanderbilt/What do you like most about Vanderbilt?
Vanderbilt has a lot of things going for it. What made it stand out for me over other institutions was the focus on the student as an individual and the amount of resources that are made available for you to take advantage of.

About Me:
In addition to school, I have had the opporunity to do a lot of things here in Nashville. I compete with the Vanderbilt Men's Water Polo club team; volunteer as a pianist throughout the medical center; sing with "Radial Grooves," the VMS a capella group; and lead the psychiatry interest group. I also recently started baking my own bread.

Why did you choose Vanderbilt/What do you like most about Vanderbilt?
I was drawn to Vanderbilt in large part by the new curriculum - time and time again, we hear "patients don't read the book," so it seems like a no-brainer that we should spend more time with patients.

About Me:
I am a native Nashvillian and completed my undergraduate education at Vanderbilt University, where I worked with Camp Kesem and was a member of the nationally-ranked debate team. After graduating in 2013 with a BA in Molecular and Cellular Biology, I spent a year obtaining an MBA at Belmont University and interning at Emdeon. At Vanderbilt School of Medicine, I have been involved in a variety of organizations, including the Shade Tree Clinic and Project REMEDY. During my free time, I enjoys running, watching movies, and continuing to find new restaurants in the city.

Sydney Rooney.jpg Vanderbilt Email: sydney.r.rooney@vanderbilt.edu

Undergraduate Major: Biomedical Engineering and  Applied Mathematics & Statistics

 Career Interests: Pediatrics

Why did you choose Vanderbilt/What do you like most about Vanderbilt?
I chose Vanderbilt because I wanted to go to a school that valued that gave me as much hands-on time as possible. Coming from an engineering background, I knew that was the only way I learned, and Vanderbilt didn't disappoint.

About Me:
On campus, I'm involved in Best Buddies and love talking on the phone with my buddy, Sharmane, when I walk home from the hospital. I am also on the board of Careers in Medicine where I design a biannual newsletter for the entire school. Outside of school, I like to dabble in baking and amateur photography.

Why did you choose Vanderbilt/What do you like most about Vanderbilt?
I really loved the flexibility the new curriculum gave, especially during the 3rd and 4th years. In addition, Nashville is a growing city and I have grown to love it over the past 5 years.

About Me:
I have tried exploring new restaurants all throughout Nashville as well as going back to my favorite places. The food scene in Nashville is thriving and eating and these trendy, innovative new restaurants is one of my favorite things to do. Among my favorite places to eat are Butchertown Hall, Chauhan Ale & Masala House, and Rolf and Daughters. On campus I am the Student Tour Guide Ambassador along with Cam Upchurch.

Brittany Sneider.JPG Vanderbilt Email: brittany.c.schneider@vanderbilt.edu

 Undergraduate University: Vanderbilt University

 Undergraduate Major: Neuroscience

Career Interests: Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, who knows  yet!

Why did you choose Vanderbilt/What do you like most about Vanderbilt?
Vanderbilt has many great assets such as having 3 clinical years to learn and decide your future specialty, but for me what I liked most were the people and culture - my peers and the faculty are bright and ambitious but also understand the importance of having balance in your life. Knowing that the people around you value having an overall healthy life makes it easy to have fun amongst the hard work of medical school!

About Me:
I grew up in CT and wanted to experience something outside of the Northeast, so I moved to the South for college at Vanderbilt and haven't looked back! I took two years off after graduating to work in the electronic health record field and then came back to Vanderbilt for medical school. I am a big foodie so I love to take advantage of all of the amazing restaurants in Nashville! I also really enjoy exploring all of the outdoors activities here like hiking, waterfalls, going out on a pontoon boat on the lake, or just walking around Centennial Park. I was on the Social Work team at Shade Tree last year and I will be one of the Cadaver Ball (medical school ball, aka best night of the year) Chairs for the second time this year!

Kelly Schuering.jpg Vanderbilt Email: kelly.m.schuering@vanderbilt.edu

 Hometown: St. Louis, MO

 Undergraduate University: Duke University

Undergraduate Major: Public Policy and Global Health

Career Interests: Unsure, probably Peds or OB/GYN

Why did you choose Vanderbilt/What do you like most about Vanderbilt?
First and foremost, I choose Vanderbilt for the sense of community I felt while interviewing and at second look, and I'm happy to say that community is even stronger than I had initially thought! Also, the curriculum and the flexibility it gives to explore during 3rd and 4th year really appealed to me since I'm unsure of what I want to do long term.

About Me:
After graduating, I spent last year working as a social worker with a mobile nursing clinic serving the low income elderly in Denver. At VUSM, I've enjoyed continuing to explore my interests by serving as a social worker at the Shade Tree Clinic, learning more about policy with the Medicine, Ethics, Law and Policy Club, and participating in Christian and Catholic fellowship groups. In my free time, I love to play basketball, hike in Tennessee's awesome state parks, and cook for my friends' weekly potluck!

 Hometown: Geneva, IL

 Undergraduate University: Vanderbilt University

 Undergraduate Major: Biology and Spanish

 Career Interests: Pediatrics, Orthopedics, Oncology

Why did you choose Vanderbilt/What do you like most about Vanderbilt?
The fun, friendly people. Awesome city to live in. Great food scene.

About Me:
I spent my undergrad years majoring in Biology and Spanish, rowing for the crew team, traveling in Central America, and generally enjoying my time in Nashville. In fact, I enjoyed it so much that I decided to stick around Vanderbilt for awhile, and med school seemed like a good enough excuse to do so. Although still undecided as to what type of physician I'd like to be, I've loved my time at VUSM. In my spare time, I can be found playing basketball (or any sport, really), wandering through used book stores, and hyping myself up for College Cup.

Cam Upchurch.JPG Vanderbilt Email: cameron.p.upchurch@vanderbilt.edu

 Hometown: Tucson, AZ

 Undergraduate University: University of Arizona

 Undergraduate Major:

Career Interests: TBD; Emergency Medicine vs General Surgery.  I like shock and resuscitation science.

Why did you choose Vanderbilt/What do you like most about Vanderbilt?
I came here because of the culture. Everyone I met at interviews and second look seemed to be really happy, having a great time, and living it up in med school. The faculty were approachable and I met several faculty that I looked up to and could see myself being around. So I came here, and it has been great and definitely lived up to the hype I created (I have more fun in med school than undergrad...and I went to the University of Arizona).

About Me:
I like to bike everywhere around town on the purple rim/pink wheeled single-speed that I built, as well as road bike, run and trail run, slackline, chill with my awesome dog Millie, fill my growler up with something delicious or do work outside at one of Nashville's many breweries and craft beer spots, woodwork, and see music. I am taking a year off currently doing trauma outcomes research and learning biostats/epi/study design, which has been great! I am a head of the Batson College Student Affiliate Advisors, a Social Rounds committee member, Ambassador of the Tour Guides program, head of the General Surgery Interest Group, very involved with the Shade Tree Trot (the annual 5K race to raise money for the student-run, free clinic, Shade Tree Clinic), teaching/mentoring underclassmen, and Scrub Class trainer extraordinaire.

Why did you choose Vanderbilt/What do you like most about Vanderbilt?
I chose Vanderbilt because I believed it has the best opportunities and because I love Nashville. What I like most about Vanderbilt is how supportive and amazing my classmates and professors are.

About Me:
My favorite thing to do in Nashville is to explore all of the restaurants. My hobbies include baking and dancing. On campus, I am a clinic coordinator for Shade Tree and the Undergraduate Mentoring Chair for AMSA.
