Laboratory Rotation

The Laboratory rotation will provide insight to the potential roles of a genetic counselor in the laboratory and at local companies who employ genetic counselors. The learner will work with a genetic counselor and pathologist in genetic test utilization. Students will develop knowledge of genetic testing strategies and the tools to select the best available genetic test for both patients and the institution. As part of this rotation, the student will also observe in the laboratories that are performing institutional testing, including molecular genetics and cytogenetics labs. The role in this rotation may include reviewing raw data, interpretation of results, and/or report editing. During this rotation students will also have an opportunity to work with genetic counselors in industry to learn about expanding roles in this setting.
