The biennial MSTP Leadership Workshop II was held on September 21, 2019 at the John Seigenthaler Center. The purpose of this half-day workshop is to provide continued leadership training to MSTP students in their final clinical years of medical school. William Cooper, MD, MPH, a Professor of Pediatrics and Vice Chair for Faculty Affairs, facilitated the workshop and engaged students with Mentimeter, an interactive presentation software. The workshop was divided into three parts: Promoting Optimal Teamwork, Addressing Variations in Performance, and Leading Change. In the first part, JP Arroyo, MD, PhD, a Nephrology fellow, discussed a case in which the night intern giving sign-out ordered the wrong medication for a patient. In the second part, led by Celestine Wanjalla, MD, PhD, an instructor of medicine, students explored how to have the “coffee cup conversation” with a rotation student who was underperforming in the lab. Finally, in the last portion of the workshop, led by Sara Van Driest, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, students learned how to “rock the chair” when implementing a new program at an institution. At the end of the workshop, students engaged with a panel of Vanderbilt leaders composed of Seth Karp, MD, John Manning, PhD, MBA, Katherine Hartmann, MD, PhD, and Kathryn Edwards, MD and received invaluable advice about how to excel as leaders. Overall, the students came away with specific leadership skills that will help them succeed in the next stages of their career. Thank you to the Leadership Workshop II planning committee, Eileen Shiuan (G5), Aaron Lim (G4), Jay Kang (G2), Ben Fowler (G2), Dr. Chris Williams and Bryn Sierra for their hard work!
