Focus on Fellowships

NIH recently updated their published success rates to include fiscal year 2019. The combined F30/F31 success rate for fiscal years 2013 – 2019 is 28%. In comparison, the MSTP combined overall success rate for our current G2 – M4 classes is 64%. Even more impressive: 83% of this year’s M4 class received an F30 or F31 during their time in the program!
Applying for a fellowship is a lengthy process, but the benefits are worth the effort. Not only does a fellowship provide a financial reward and an impressive addition to your CV, but you will also strengthen skills that you will utilize throughout your career. For example, a successful application requires succinct and logical communication, a skill that is important as both a researcher and a clinician.
In order to maximize your chances of success, please start planning your application early. Calendar year 2020 submission deadlines for F30/F31 applications are:
- Wednesday, April 8th
- Thursday, May 7th (AIDS)
- Monday, August 10th
- Monday, September 7th (AIDS)
- Tuesday, December 8th
