Physician-Scientist Speaker Series with Sachin Patel, MD, PhD
By Avery Bogart (G1)
On November 4, 2021, the Vanderbilt MSTP had the pleasure of hearing from Dr. Sachin Patel for the annual Fall Physician-Scientist Speaker Series (PSSS), a seminar where a Vanderbilt faculty member gives insight into the life and career of a practicing physician-scientist. We were fortunate to learn about Dr. Patel’s experiences during his time training to become a psychiatrist, as well as his journey to biomedical research. Dr. Patel also provided some of the lessons he has learned along the way, including the importance of making time for personal endeavors outside of science and medicine. Dr. Patel will be transitioning to the role of Chair and Lizzie Gilman Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, and Psychiatrist-in-Chief at Northwestern Memorial Hospital’s Norman and Ida Stone Institute of Psychiatry in January 2022. We are thankful that Dr. Patel was able to share this time with our community prior to his departure from Vanderbilt and we wish him the best in his new venture. During the PSSS, our program also had the opportunity to recognize the following outgoing College Faculty Advisors who have served as mentors to our students: Sachin Patel, MD, PhD, David Aronoff, MD, Maureen Gannon, PhD, Jim Goldenring, MD, PhD, Amy Major, PhD, Ambra Pozzi, PhD, and Kim Rathmell, MD, PhD. We greatly appreciate their dedication to training the next generation of physician-scientists.
