Finding a reliable (and reasonably-priced!) auto shop can be a real struggle. The following are a list of places that were recommended by past classes. Many people in our class took their cars to an authorized dealership; therefore, we listed several of those at the end of this section.
One past VMS student writes “When someone ever-so-stupid driver decided to destroy my car in the snow this past January, the body shop I took my car to was awesome! They had a car rental place on site as well as offices for many of the major insurance companies that you may have. Also, they are right in downtown. I can’t speak as to if they are expensive or not due to the extent of the damages that my car had. However, if you are in an accident and someone else is paying for it, these are no doubt the people to go to.”
200 Main St, Nashville
Previous students who have had their transmission break while at VUSM have had good experiences with this shop, recommended by Carl Wood’s Garage. Although transmissions will always be expensive, this place does a good job of keeping prices as reasonable as possible.
3211 Charlotte Ave.
Past VMS students have noted that Carl’s is convenient, prompt, and thoroughly explains your car’s needs and price.
108 28th Ave. N
Recommended by Vandy students and physicians.
5025 Charlotte Pike
If you have grease-monkey genes, you’ll approve of this place. It doesn’t look like much, but the work is great!
412 40th Ave. N.
For those with temperamental foreign cars.
4266 Kenilwood Dr.
104 Southeast Parkway
Firestone is known for selling quality tires, and they are faithful to a generous warranty if anything happens to a tire they sold you in the past. However, they also do other repairs and maintenance. Their staff is extremely friendly and shop has a nice atmosphere that is comfortable to wait in for minor repairs.
406 Gallatin Avenue
4044 Nolensville Pike
Close to campus, and recommended by classmates for excellent customer service. Online reviews say their prices are reasonable. They also always have inspirational messages on their sign!
1820 21st Avenue South
For tires and alignments, they cannot be beat! The Road Hazard is a must (only about $5/tire) and they service what they sell. It can get busy, but they do take calls ahead. Also, great weekend hours, and they’re open late! Be sure to shop the sales, since their services get pricey.
7602 Highway 70 S
Recommended on NPR’s car talk! (Don’t you want your mechanic to be famous??) Ask for the “hilarious” Ken Peterson for an extra treat.
1210 McGavock St.
1111 Jo Johnson Ave
Comes highly recommended by many local mechanics (and local students!). Call ahead and make an appointment because he’s one busy (but very nice) man. This place is one of the only body shops that accepts Nationwide Insurance Claims (speaking from personal experience, unfortunately) in Nashville.
5300 Alabama Ave.
great solution for your car problems: fast, reliable, and reasonably priced.
4400 Charlotte Ave.
From oil changes to breaks, they do it all! And according to some VMS students, they never overcharge!
