One of the first decisions you’ll need to make as a newcomer to Nashville is how to handle your money (or what’s left after Vanderbilt gets through with you). The three most popular banks — AmSouth, Bank of America, and SunTrust — all have branches within walking distance of campus, have 24-hour ATMS, and ATMs right on campus in Medical Center North and outside the Hospital Cafeteria.
NOTE: Most Vandy med students rarely physically go to their banks. It is fairly easy to continue using a bank that does not have a branch in Nashville.
“I have been fairly happy with my AmSouth service. The people there are always helpful and friendly. But while I haven’t had any problems, I’ve heard from a couple of people that AmSouth has occasionally deducted fees that they weren’t expecting.” Banker’s hours in the South are even worse than in the North, but the 21st Ave. branch is open on Saturday mornings. Bring your Vandy ID when setting up your account.

Like many of the banks in the area, Bank of America has a special student account. It offers unlimited checking with no minimum balance and no service charge. They also offer a Mastercard or VISA with no annual fee for one year. In addition, Bank of America offers several popular interest-bearing checking accounts. Bank of America has the advantage of being available throughout the country, you can almost always find an ATM, but some users find their fees frustrating.

Good location but online costumer reviews aren’t the most glowing.

Online reviews are generally positive. Lots of locations available in Nashville, but this bank may not be ideal if you’re from another state, because it will be difficult to access branches outside of Tennessee.

SunTrust offers special accounts for Vanderbilt students: one for undergrads and one for grad students. Make sure that you get the latter. With the Vanderbilt Graduate Student Gold Account, you receive free interest-bearing checking with no minimum balance, a VISA card with no annual fee, a free box of 100 checks, and unlimited ATM access. They also offer overdraft protection. There are five ATMs on the Vanderbilt campus: Sarratt, Alexander Hall, Vanderbilt Hill Student Center, Vanderbilt Hospital Cafeteria, and Medical Center North Lobby.

Once known as Union Planters National Bank, Regions offers free checking with a $500 minimum balance. According to past Paddles, Regions is “likely to have the most competitive mortgage rates in town.”

Wells Fargo is a large bank that can be found all along the East Coast and South. No branches super close to campus, however they are conveniently located near other shopping locations: West End branch is near a Kroger, Publix, and Target, while the Green Hills location is in the same plaza as the Green Hills Mall.
