Guide to Benefits for Postdoctoral Fellows

 Health  Insurance

Employee Health Insurance (Employee Fellows must enroll in HR benefits within 30 days of hire date) coverage begins on start date of appointment. Details about employee health insurance options are at VU  Human Resources Benefits. Employee postdocs pay a portion of their monthly health insurance premium.

Gallagher coverage begins on start date of appointment. (Trainee Fellows must enroll in the plan within 30 days of start date.) Most trainee postdocs funded by training grants do not pay a monthly contribution for individual insurance coverage. Contact your departmental administrator to find out if monthly contribution is required for family coverage.

 Dental  Insurance

Two voluntary dental insurance plans are available to employees. Plan details can be found at VU HR Benefits Dental Insurance. Employee postdocs pay a portion of their monthly dental insurance premium.

 Life & AD&D  Insurance

Vanderbilt provides life insurance for employees at a rate of 1 times their salary. Supplemental life insurance may be purchased. Details about the life & AD&D insurance can be found at VU HR Benefits Life Insurance & VU HR Benefits AD&D.

VU research fellow trainees are not eligible for Life & AD&D Insurance.

Included as part of the Garnett-Powers Postdoctoral Trainee Benefits Program at no additional cost for trainee. The life & AD&D insurance provides $40,000, in the event of death, with an additional benefit payable for AD&D. It also provides the medical evacuation and repatriation benefits necessary to satisfy the J Visa Program for those postdocs holding J1 Visas and their dependents holding J2 Visas. A vision discount plan is included at no additional cost for trainee. VU reserach trainees can choose from plans through Gallagher or Garnett-Powers.

 Retirement Plan

Immediately upon the start date of appointment, new employee postdocs may elect to contribute a pre-tax portion of their salary to the Vanderbilt University Retirement Plan. The amount of pre-tax salary that can be contributed to retirement accounts is subject to IRS limits.
After the 1-year anniversary of employment, employee postdocs are required to contribute 3% of their annual salary to the Retirement Plan. After the 1-year anniversary of employment, Vanderbilt will match contributions to retirement accounts dollar-for-dollar, up to 5% of the postdoc's annual salary.  Flexible Spending Accounts

 Disability

Vanderbilt pays for Long Term Disability Insurance covering the first $24,000 of an employee’s annual base pay. Employees pay for coverage above $24,000. Vanderbilt also offers an optional disability package through The Hartford. Details about LTD can be found at VU Benefits LTD.  Vanderbilt  Childcare

On-site child care services support working parents while providing care and education for the children enrolled. Recreation and Wellness Center

 Occupational  Health Clinic &  Faculty/Staff  Express Care

The Occupational Health Clinic (OHC) helps protect Vanderbilt employees through a variety of programs to monitor exposure to workplace hazards and treat work-related illness and injury. OHC also offers Faculty/Staff Express Care, a walk-in clinic for minor illnesses such as colds and flu.  Work/Life  Connections-  EAP

Work/Life Connections – EAP (WLC-EAP) provides psychological support to the Vanderbilt faculty and staff and promotes problem solving and stress resilience through individual counseling, group education, and manager consultations.
