General Commencement Information
Graduation takes place each year on the second Friday morning of May. Students and faculty participate in a University wide ceremony on the Alumni Lawn, followed by a separate Medical School ceremony in Langford Auditorium.
Candidates receive the hood of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, and degrees are then conferred by the Dean, sometimes with the aid of proud physician parents. Selected faculty members serve as marshals, and the pomp and circumstance is awe-inspiring.
On the Thursday evening before graduation, outstanding students are honored at Class Day. Awards are given in recognition of academic achievement and service to the school.
The Canby Robinson Award recognizes a student chosen by the class as the one best embodying the traits of the ideal physician.
The prestigious Founder's Medal is given to a student graduating at the top of the class, selected by the faculty for excellence in all endeavors.
