Post Graduate Year 3 (PGY3)

In the third year all residents provide psychiatric assessments and treatment in outpatient settings to adults with mental illnesses. Residents have clinics at both the Nashville VA and Vanderbilt’s Outpatient Clinic. Residents spend time with attending supervision in specialty clinics for psychotic disorders, geriatrics, developmental disabilities, childhood disorders and addictions. One day per week is reserved for residents to treat patients with individual and group psychotherapy, and to receive supervision with an individual psychotherapy supervisor. For residents interested in an academic career, there is flexibility to allow for time devoted to participating in ongoing research in the Department or in working on their own research interests. Residents can also volunteer to work with medical students at the Shade Tree Clinic a free clinic organized by Vanderbilt medical students to provide primary care and psychiatric services in a low income neighborhood in Nashville.

In addition to the ongoing seminar series, PGY 3 residents participate in ongoing case conferences in psychotherapy and faculty led case discussions.
