Brief Bio
Dr. Gaines has been a member of the faculty since 1987. He recently initiated behavioral medicine-clinical psychology services for VUMC programs in surgical weight loss and inflammatory bowel disease. He is interested in self regulatory processes, particularly reasoning, underlying adaptation to illness and surgical weight loss.

Clinical Interests
Pre-surgery behavioral medicine evaluations, psychotherapy, health and behavior assessments and interventions

Research Interests
Cognitive aspects of weight control beliefs and the maintenance of weight loss, adaptation to chronic illness, behavioral medicine, development of drinking problems
