Acute Care

To make an appointment, call (615) 322-2427 or visit www.vumc.org/student-health/online-appointments to schedule an appointment that meets your needs.

In the event of an obvious severe injury or illness, the student should go immediately to the emergency department.

In the event that you develop an acute illness or injury, please call the Student Health Center as soon as possible to be scheduled in the first available, same day appointment. Often times we will be able to see you within a few hours. If you experience an illness or injury that cannot wait for a scheduled same day appointment, please come in to the Student Health Clinic for evaluation in our Acute Care Clinic.

Please be aware:

Wait times at the Acute Care Clinic tend to be longer. Patients will be seen on a first come, first served basis after being seen by a nurse and assessed for seriousness of illness/injury. Patients with serious illness or injury will always be seen first, so we encourage students with non-urgent problems to schedule an appointment so that their wait times in clinic are minimized.  Students who present to the Acute Care Clinic for non-acute or chronic problems may be scheduled for a regular appointment on the same day or at a later date.

Treatments we can provide in the Acute Care Clinic:

  • Nebulizer treatments for asthma exacerbation
  • IV fluids for dehydration
  • IV antibiotics for systemic illness
  • IV medications for allergic reactions

After hours illness or injuries:

Emergency consultation services (615- 322-2427) are available 24-hours a day, 7 days a week from on-call professionals. They will give advice related to your complaints but cannot assess you over the telephone. If you experience a severe illness or injury you should go immediately to the Emergency Department. As a general rule, we do not call in medication refills after hours.
