Dr. Mark de Caestecker

Nephrologist. Renal regeneration researcher. Road cyclist.

What’s the best thing about being a Research Director?

Getting to see the students develop their early research ideas into concrete results

What’s one research question that has kept you up at night?

Why do some people develop long term injury and fibrosis after tissue injury, while others bounce right back, and how to convert the first into the second type of response

What do you enjoy doing when you aren’t working?

Definitely road cycling first, but then a close second and third, hanging out with my adult kids and loving my pack of dogs!

If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?

Aside from the fact I am hopeless at languages, I would really like to wake up one morning speaking fluent Mandarin and Italian!
