Dr. Kate Brelsford

Medical anthropologist. World traveler. Future teleporter.

What’s the best thing about being a Research Director?

I think my favorite part is meeting with students as they are developing research questions. They have so many diverse and interesting ideas. Their excitement, enthusiasm, and drive are contagious.

What’s one research question that has kept you up at night?

Hopefully that question is the focus of a future grant (and thus not ready to share). More broadly, I often wonder how we can make qualitative research methods more accessible to clinical researchers, especially here at Vanderbilt.

What do you enjoy doing when you aren’t working?

I became an anthropologist because I love to travel and meet people; those two passions continue to shape my life.  I also love holidays and am always looking for an excuse to celebrate something!

If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?

I’d love to be able to apparate. Short of that, I’d settle for learning Italian (in Italy).

Dr. Brelsford previously conducted fieldwork in Costa Rica.
