Our top ranked facilities include Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Hospital, The Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, and Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. Partnerships with the Nashville Veterans Administration and an ever expanding affiliate network of community and regional medical systems, provide the patient base for Vanderbilt.
Surgeons from the Section of Surgical Sciences run the ACS Level I Trauma Center and Burn Center. Vanderbilt’s top ranked surgeons also provide leadership and innovations in areas such as high volume pancreatic and hepatobiliary surgery, liver, kidney, pancreas, heart and lung transplantation, breast cancers intraoperative radiation therapy, trans-anal endoscopic microsurgery, robotic surgical procedures, collaborations with engineers, perinatal and fetal surgical interventions, endovascular peripheral and neurovascular interventions, transcutaneous aortic valve replacement, minimally invasive mitral valve repair, pediatric cardiac repair of congenital cardiac anomalies, and many other unique services.
Our medical center boasts 1,105 total beds, 834 adult and 271 children’s. Vanderbilt's 56 adult and 16 pediatric ORs enable us to perform over 51,000 surgeries annually. As of July the Section will have 244 full-time clinical faculty and on average about 177 residents and fellows. Twelve adult specialties are nationally rank best or high-performing, 10 pediatric specialties rank nationally best.
Vanderbilt's research is an integral part of what we do in our efforts to improve patient care. Our research efforts span from spread of cancers and various clinical trials, to identifying safer systems of surgical care, and improving educational systems for students, residents and faculty. Vanderbilt University School of Medicine remains in the top 10 nationally for NIH funding.
