Renaissance Man<\/strong><\/p>\n

Pulmonologist, thespian, award-winning baker, competitive swimmer, art collector and performer in an all-bassoon band; this sounds like the description of a roomful of people, but in reality it is a rundown of the many hats worn by Ronald Bronitsky, M.D., \u201877.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I\u2019m ready to die, I want to be able to look back and say I tried everything I thought I could possibly do, and I did it to the best of my ability,\u201d Bronitsky said. \u201cBeing a physician was a great way to train my scientific mind and provided a wonderful career for me, but the other side of the brain is art, music and the ethereal. I was always searching for that next thing that would be a challenge.\u201d<\/p>\n

After Bronitsky sees patients in his pulmonary practice with Presbyterian Medical Group in Albuquerque, New Mexico, he often heads to a rehearsal\u2014either for his next theatrical production or for a performance with the Bosque Bassoon Band. If there\u2019s no rehearsal, he might roll up his sleeves to bake a few of his pies\u2014maybe a prize-winning lemon meringue or autumn harvest pie.<\/p>\n

He learned how to bake pies from his mother, and given his decidedly competitive nature, he developed his own recipes. Bronitsky soon began bringing home prize ribbons at the state fair, and he moved on to the yearly pie championships held by the American Pie Council. He has bragging rights to having won \u201cbest in the country\u201d for his cherry pie. He\u2019s even designed a special kitchen in his new home, with space just for baking.<\/p>\n

After graduating from VUSM, Bronitsky completed a three-year internal medicine residency at Vanderbilt. He gives the school a lot of credit for how he lives his life today.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had a great education there, and it made me work a lot harder than if I had gone anywhere else,\u201d he said. \u201cI probably would\u2019ve been a little lazier if I had.\u201d<\/p>\n

He remains close to many of his friends from that time, meeting with them every two or three years. This year, Bronistsky, Joe Little, M.D., Steve Hines, M.D., Scott Harriage, M.D., Bob Latham, M.D., Ted Garrett, M.D., and Byron Hogsette, M.D. are gathering in the San Juan Islands.<\/p>\n

In addition to maintaining those relationships, Bronitsky feels a personal obligation to give back to the medical school. He is a white coat sponsor for first-year medical students, and he\u2019s named the School of Medicine in his will.<\/p>\n

\u201cI owe it to Vanderbilt to help it continue the tradition of medical excellence and the training of medical students to become outstanding physicians.\u201d<\/p>\n
