{"id":745,"date":"2015-08-21T19:51:42","date_gmt":"2015-08-21T19:51:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mc.vanderbilt.edu\/vanderbiltmedicine\/?p=745"},"modified":"2021-08-11T19:41:14","modified_gmt":"2021-08-11T19:41:14","slug":"vusm-student-earns-hivaids-fellowship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medschool.vanderbilt.edu\/vanderbilt-medicine\/vusm-student-earns-hivaids-fellowship\/","title":{"rendered":"VUSM student earns HIV\/AIDS fellowship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/t2-main\/medschool-prd\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/82\/2015\/08\/Asokan_Ishan.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-747\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/t2-main\/medschool-prd\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/82\/2015\/08\/Asokan_Ishan.jpg\" alt=\"Asokan_Ishan\" width=\"189\" height=\"235\" \/><\/a>Fourth-year Vanderbilt University School of Medicine student Ishan Asokan has been selected as an inaugural member of the Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF) Fellowship for students addressing HIV\/AIDS and health disparities.<\/p>\n<p>Asokan has been working at the Vanderbilt Comprehensive Care Clinic (VCCC) since his first year of medical school and will be using the clinic as the site of his 10-week internship.<\/p>\n<p>The EJAF fellowship seeks to destigmatize HIV and provide care to those who otherwise would not be able to afford it.<\/p>\n<p>Through the internship Asokan hopes to form a connection between VCCC and Nashville\u2019s LGBTQ facility, OutCentral.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the goals is to create a safe space and treatment facility for LGBT youth to access,\u201d said Asokan. \u201cIt is really\u00a0an empowerment project.
