\u2022 There is indeed a disease;<\/p>\n
\u2022 Three features are present in virtually every patient with CFS:<\/p>\n
1. Profound fatigue (devastating and ongoing) not alleviated by rest. \u201cWe\u2019re not talking \u2018it\u2019s 3 a.m. and I\u2019m feeling tired kind of fatigue.\u2019 This is devastating knocked out fatigue,\u201d said Ellen Wright Clayton, M.D., J.D.
\n2. Post-exertional malaise (often described by patients as a \u201ccrash\u201d or \u201ccollapse\u201d after even minor physical or mental exertion). \u201cIf you and I get tired, we push through it, recover and get over it. For these folks, exertion has a profound impact, often delayed a day or two,\u201d she said.
\n3. Unrefreshing sleep<\/p>\n
\u2022 And at least one of these two criteria must be present:
\n1. Cognitive impairment (brain fog, inability to think) or
\n2. Orthostatic intolerance (needing to sit down before you fall down)<\/p>\n
\u2022 The name of the disease should be changed to systemic exertion intolerance disease (SEID). \u201cWe spent a lot of time thinking about a name, because we feel the name chronic fatigue syndrome has done this community a huge disservice.
