VISRA Symposium with Guest Speaker, Jun Ding

On Friday, February 26, 2016, the winter VISRA interns presented their research from the past two months during the bi-annual VISRA Research Symposium. Audience members included VISP scholars, PI and lab members from the host labs, and various other Vanderbilt students and faculty. Several 4th year VISP students also presented on some of their current research.

Two VISP students have recently been listed as co-authors in new publications. Second-Year VISP Student Receives International Fellowship

A second-year VISP student, Tessay Popay, has been award NZFGW Fellowship from the New Zealand Federation of Graduate Women. According to the NZFGW website, the fellowship is a "post-graduate award for women's study or research, usually at a doctoral level," intended to "promote lifelong education and to enable graduate women to use their expertise to effect positive change."

Farewell VISRA 2015; Welcome new VISP students!

On July 31, 2015, this summer's VISRA participants gathered with their fellow Vanderbilt peers and faculty to present their research at the bi-annual VISRA Research Symposium. The Symposium is designed to give the students a space to present their findings and to give the undergraduates valuable presentation experience. The Symposium presentations are the capstone of the VISRA experience. 

VISP student Kamakoti Bhat is first author of publication!

Kamakoti Bhat is the first author is an article that will be published on February 13, 2015.  Kami is a 3rd year VISP student in the lab of Dr. David Cortez in the Department of Biochemistry.  The details of her article are as follows: High-affinity DNA Binding Domains of Replication Protein A (RPA) Direct SMARCAL1-dependent Replication Fork Remodeling. Another VISP student awarded American Heart Association fellowship!

Gokhan Unlu, a 4th year VISP student in Cell and Developmental Biology, has been awarded an American Heart Association Fellowship in support of his research project. This is a predoctoral fellowship that will support Gokhan's project for 2 years (Jan 2015 - Dec 2016).  The project focuses on COPII-dependent trafficking of collagen and fibronectin to promote heart repair.  Gokhan is working in Ela Knapik's lab and they will be collaborating with Antonis Hatzopoulos' lab for this project.

Applications for the Vanderbilt International Summer Research Program for Summer 2015 are open now!  We are delighted to be offering this program for a 5th summer.  During VISRA, students have the opportunity to complete a biomedical research project in the laboratory of a Vanderbilt University School of Medicine faculty scientist.  The program is designed to give talented international undergraduate students a chance to see what life as a biomedical PhD student is like at a top notch research institution.
